any recent name change?

or did you become self employed?

How can you be sure you don't owe the IRS? Just asking, not being snarky. We got hit by a $16K "delinquent" tax bill because our CPA made an error on our returns. You can imagine our shock!

OP here. No name change, but we did have a nanny last year... though again, this would have gone to both of us. Of course, I cannot be 100% sure, but the one time we did owe them money, the letter came by regular mail, and we paid it on time.

Yes, I would be shocked at $16k, too!!

Forgot to add that we also got two letters - one for me and one for DH. Even though the usps card has your name for both, it could very well be that its for each of you.

the faster you get to the post office the better off you'll feel. just rip the band aid off....anticipating or wondering is more painful than actually knowing. and whatever it is, it cant be THAT bad. So what if you owe a bit more. happens to a lot of us. the will work with you if its a hardship.

did you dip into your retirement last year? or any other non-ordinary occurrence outside of the nanny? how did you classify your nanny? how did you pay her?

Did your CPA do your taxes or did you do them yourselves?

Thanks PP. We used TurboTax and classified the nanny as a household employee. I can't think if any non-ordinary occurrence. And you're right maybe there is one letter for each. I will know tomorrow, I am going first thing in the morning.

The only time I ever got certified letters was when I owed about 1200 in taxes. I think its a standard practice to send certified letters for owing money so you can never claim you never knew...and then you are on the hook for the interest and penalties that start accruing. Having said all that, I actually found them very very pleasant and helpful. Doesn't seem like much money now but at the time I was one year out of grad school and this was a fortune. They walked me through how to submit the " offer and compromise" and the payment schedule.

OP - what happened? did you pick up your letters?

OP here, yes I did, and one was for me the other for my husband. It was the same letter we got last year and we have already paid the amount we owed! Gah! Will need to call them on Monday. The good news is that we have proof of payment so this should be resolved. Interestingly enough they charged us interest in the initial letter but not in this one.

Great news OP! I get very nervous with anything coming from the state or the IRS (and I have not done anything to get nervous about- but I still do!!)

The bad news is you will never, ever, ever get a human being on the phone (double points for use or lose leave season, when all federal employees are on leave). Thanks Republicans for slashing the IRS budget to way below what is necessary to staff phone lines because conservative charities were being picked on. Seriously, give up now, and respond in writing with a copy of your proof of payment.

Just FYI you can check to make sure the IRS received your tax payments on their website. They list payments clear as day once you log in.

I hope after the new president is inaugurated , illegal immigrants feel the same fear that citizens feel from the IRS .

^^Why is it necessary to hitch this mean and nasty message onto a nearly three year old post? PP. you're an idiot.

No my DH is listed first. The more I think about it, the more I could imagine that it has to do with the nanny, because I applied for an EIN. Maybe something went wrong there.

Hope your DH is up for a cabinet post...

IRS is super easy to work with. DCGovt are complete morons. They try to claw back tax refunds they aren't entitled to. They asked for proof that I am not a D.C. Resident...I live in Maryland.

Could be two different tax years. I got five identical letters this fall covering five tax years.
