| My kid right now is in the lower elementary program of a private montessori school and we are moving to McLean after this school year. She will be 3rd grade coming Fall. When should we start the whole AAP testing/screening/referal process? |
| I thought it was three months ago. Check the FCPS AAP website. |
What makes you assume your child is AAP material? |
Oh please. I think AAP is one of the most ridiculous ways to deal with gifted kids, but all the OP wants to know is how to get her child screened. She might have some kind of clue where her kid is academically. Lighten up. |
Thanks, PP. OP here. I didn't assume she is AAP material. Just am completely new to the system and am clueless about when to start worry about these things. The school said they will assess her when she arrives, but that cound mean changes in classroom if she is found eligible. I am just trying to minimize changes for her. We are from out of state by the way. |
You can't apply until you arrive and are living in your residence. However, if you are coming from out of state you can apply out of cycle. Over the summer they have committees that meet weekly or bi weekly to deal with applications from out of state transfers. Check out the AAP website for details. The best thing is to hand carry your testing results, report cards, teacher recommendations and any related assessments with you, rather than leaving them in your household goods shipment. If your child is currently being served by a gifted program in your school, bring official documentation of that as well. If the test scores are good (99%-ish) I wouldn't worry about providing your own work samples. Work samples are not necessary if the scores and teacher recs are good. Register at your base school as soon as you arrive. This starts the ball rolling for the rest of the application process. Applying and acceptance to AAP is a very simple and straightforward process, in spite of what you might think after reading this board. |
Wow, someone has a chip on their shoulder
|
Thanks, PP. So I should have her tested and should obtain teacher recommendations before we arrive. OK. This is helpful. |
Yes. The AAP website has a list of approved tests they accept from out of state transfers. If you are moving at the end of the school year you would likely need to start at your base school. If you are moving during the summer, you apply when you arrive and receive your placement before the school starts in September. Your child will just go directly to whatever school she is placed in, either the base or the AAP center school. You will not need to worry about transferring schools mid year, or missing out on services because she wasn't here to take the placement tests in October. There are so many transfers to this area due to the military, so fcps is well prepared to deal with summer transfers. |
It doesn't take a whole lot to be considered "AAP material". Sorry to burst your bubble, PP. |
Shhh. Let's petend to be civil for the out-of-towner OP. |
Great post! Here's a link for the OP: http://www.fcps.edu/is/aap/identificationntc.shtml |
| Thanks, PPs!! Really appreciate this. |
| NP here- we are moving into the area in Feb. Do I pay for the testing or will FCPS test DC before the end of this school year? DC will be in 2nd grade in Feb and my family who has kids in FCPS suggested that we look into AAP. |
I think that the county has only one testing window per school year (which is in the fall), so if you want your child screened for 3rd grade entry, you will need to pay for the test. Someone will, of course, correct me if I'm wrong! |
