They have opened the specialty schools lottery for the 2014 - 2015 school year.
http://www1.pgcps.org/lottery/index.aspx?id=127410 |
| Thanks, I just completed it! We did it last year and was unsuccessful but it does not hurt to try again. |
| Has anyone applied to the charter school imagine Andrews I believe in the air force base. Are the statistics low for first grade really low? |
| Hey I see Spanish as one of the choices has anyone heard of which elementary schools will have Spanish? or is that not an option next school year? |
| So the only PK3 option is Montessori, is that right? Anyone know how many slots are available? |
| Good lord that is a poorly designed website. |
| We got into Thomas Pullen as well as Heather Hills off the lottery....I think there are quite a few spots open each year (this was for 5th grade) |
| I agree with the poor site. So you do not know which school you are applying to. When I did it I just picked the specialty and that was it. They pick the schools for us. |
If you picked the specialty immersion programs I don't think the school board has decided on the sites yet. Therefore, you will not know the schools until a decision is made in February/March. |
| Does anyone know if Spanish immersion will accept all grades initially or if it will only have an entrance year at K and language qualification for later grades? |
| Nevermind, just found the K only entrance info on another page. PGCPS needs a website redesign. Ugh. |
| I agree since the Spanish program is new I think they should at least open it up to first or second grade. Maybe they should look into a dual program for kids who do not get slots in k. If only a small percentage can get into K then there should be a program for children up to second grade to come in. Ugh! The opportunities are so slim. That means that you only have the performing art schools you can get into after kindergarten. |

For those who have been in the lottery process are the chances better this year with getting a placement with more options opening up. My daughter will be going to first grade. For kindergarten I must say I struggled and put her in a catholic school. She loves school but I do not like the payments.
I put in for the lottery. At the catholic school soon we will have to sign a contract if she will come back. I am wondering if I should leave her in catholic or put her in public hoping for a spot. My hours at my job would not allow me a lot of time to be active during the day at the public school as I would like to be so this is my concern. The catholic school is very well run and I can volunteer a lot after my job which I enjoy. I know many do not feel pg county schools are good but I also wonder if the catholic school curriculum is as rigorous. Between a rock and a hard place. Any suggestions |

Please read and forward to your contacts in Prince George's County. 1) The PGCPS 2014 -2015 Specialty Programs Lottery Application Process is open, and for the first time includes "Spanish Immersion/Dual Language"! The application submission deadline is March 12, 2014 at 5:00 pm. Go to the link that describes available specialty programs including "Spanish Immersion" and "Spanish Dual Language": http://www1.pgcps.org/lottery/index.aspx?id=127524. Go here for details on the specialty program lottery application process, including the link to apply online: http://www1.pgcps.org/lottery/index.aspx?id=127410. 2) The Spanish Immersion/Dual Language sites have not been determined, but three potential sites were presented at the PGCPS Boundary Forums held in December 2013: Spanish Dual Language (Two-Way Immersion for English and non-English native speakers) at the Cesar Chavez Elementary School in Hyattsville for North County students; Full Spanish Immersion (based PGCPS' full French Immersion model) at the Phyllis E. Williams Elementary in Upper Marlboro for Central County students; and, Full Spanish Immersion at the Overlook Elementary School in Temple Hills for South County students. Download the Boundary Forums slide presentation at this link: http://www1.pgcps.org/pasb/index.aspx?id=153333. Note these important dates on slide 3: CEO's Recommendations: January 17; Public Hearing: February 4; and Board of Education Vote: February 13. Give your input on Spanish Immersion and other topics to PGCPS via an online form as soon as possible, before the CEO makes his recommendations on January 17: http://www1.pgcps.org/pasb/index.aspx?id=15290. PGCPS seeks input such as: Do you think the transition to Spanish Immersion at the potential schools should be immediate with current students transferring elsewhere, or phased where current students and new Spanish Immersion kindergarteners are at the same school until the current students graduate? Do you think additional sites or locations should be considered for the Spanish Immersion schools? All of the current potential sites are located inside the beltway. Should other schools, office parks or buildings outside the beltway be considered? 3) Also discussed at the Boundary Forums was expansion of International Baccalaureate (IB) programs. Do you want language immersion and/or enrollment via lottery added to one or more of the IB programs? If you are interested in language immersion and IB, note the following and give your input to PGCPS as soon as possible, before the CEO makes his recommendation on January 17 at: http://www1.pgcps.org/pasb/index.aspx?id=15290. Melwood Elementary School is the potential site of PGCPS' first and only IB Primary Years Program "theme" program. Consider these points: Language immersion is not included for PGCPS's IB Primary Years Program, although language immersion and IB are offered, highly valued and successful at public and private schools elsewhere (e.g., Baltimore International Academy, Maryland International Day School, and Washington International School.) The effect of PGCPS calling IB a "theme" instead of "specialty" program is that only in-boundary students would be eligible to attend; eligibility would not be open to a broader group of students via lottery. Dwight Eisenhower Middle School is the potential site of the second IB Middle Years Program "theme" school. James Madison Middle School is PGCPS' first IB Middle Years Program "theme" school. In contrast, PGCPS offers the IB Diploma Program to students by application at several comprehensive high schools throughout the county. | My daughter just got a letter that she placed in the Spanish Immersion at Phyllis E Williams Elementary. One of my concerns is that online it is rated a 3. Why would they put a specialty program in a poorly rated school? Is it to funnel more funds/resources there to boost it? Anybody know if this is a decent school? I'm also a little hesitant because the Spanish Immersion is new but the French Immersion in our area is doing well so maybe the Spanish will turn out well, too. |
