[quote=Anonymous]I received this email... Please read and forward to your contacts in Prince George's County. 1) The PGCPS 2014 -2015 Specialty Programs Lottery Application Process is open, and for the first time includes "Spanish Immersion/Dual Language"! The application submission deadline is March 12, 2014 at 5:00 pm. Go to the link that describes available specialty programs including "Spanish Immersion" and "Spanish Dual Language": http://www1.pgcps.org/lottery/index.aspx?id=127524. Go here for details on the specialty program lottery application process, including the link to apply online: http://www1.pgcps.org/lottery/index.aspx?id=127410. 2) The Spanish Immersion/Dual Language sites have not been determined, but three potential sites were presented at the PGCPS Boundary Forums held in December 2013: Spanish Dual Language (Two-Way Immersion for English and non-English native speakers) at the Cesar Chavez Elementary School in Hyattsville for North County students; Full Spanish Immersion (based PGCPS' full French Immersion model) at the Phyllis E. Williams Elementary in Upper Marlboro for Central County students; and, Full Spanish Immersion at the Overlook Elementary School in Temple Hills for South County students. Download the Boundary Forums slide presentation at this link: http://www1.pgcps.org/pasb/index.aspx?id=153333. Note these important dates on slide 3: CEO's Recommendations: January 17; Public Hearing: February 4; and Board of Education Vote: February 13. Give your input on Spanish Immersion and other topics to PGCPS via an online form as soon as possible, before the CEO makes his recommendations on January 17: http://www1.pgcps.org/pasb/index.aspx?id=15290. PGCPS seeks input such as: Do you think the transition to Spanish Immersion at the potential schools should be immediate with current students transferring elsewhere, or phased where current students and new Spanish Immersion kindergarteners are at the same school until the current students graduate? Do you think additional sites or locations should be considered for the Spanish Immersion schools? All of the current potential sites are located inside the beltway. Should other schools, office parks or buildings outside the beltway be considered? 3) Also discussed at the Boundary Forums was expansion of International Baccalaureate (IB) programs. Do you want language immersion and/or enrollment via lottery added to one or more of the IB programs? If you are interested in language immersion and IB, note the following and give your input to PGCPS as soon as possible, before the CEO makes his recommendation on January 17 at: http://www1.pgcps.org/pasb/index.aspx?id=15290. Melwood Elementary School is the potential site of PGCPS' first and only IB Primary Years Program "theme" program. Consider these points: Language immersion is not included for PGCPS's IB Primary Years Program, although language immersion and IB are offered, highly valued and successful at public and private schools elsewhere (e.g., Baltimore International Academy, Maryland International Day School, and Washington International School.) The effect of PGCPS calling IB a "theme" instead of "specialty" program is that only in-boundary students would be eligible to attend; eligibility would not be open to a broader group of students via lottery. Dwight Eisenhower Middle School is the potential site of the second IB Middle Years Program "theme" school. James Madison Middle School is PGCPS' first IB Middle Years Program "theme" school. In contrast, PGCPS offers the IB Diploma Program to students by application at several comprehensive high schools throughout the county.
