Bush White House not allowing Obama family to stay at Blair House from Jan 5 to the 15th

Anonymous
Obamas wanted to stay there [I assume for free] since the children start school on the 5th. Even Laura Bush is quoted as saying they get into Blair on the 15th as is the tradition. The Bushes were NOT academic powerhouses and the Obama children are not used to the life styles of the rich and famous with a multitude of houses they call home. This stinks .

Bush is an a$$ and so is the wife. He is the type of person that I and other moms do not want our daughters to date. Nothing there but money and connections.

According to the news, there are several social events planned for the Blair House that were planned, including invites, well in advance of the Obama request.

Doesn't Obama have a pied a terre in DC? Where did he live as a senator. This is ten days folks - relocating families go through some inconvenience all the time. I moved with a toddler, pregnant with my second, and we were in an 'all suites' hotel for almost a month - transfer came and DH had to report to work two weeks later.

Why does everything have to become personal and turn into 'blame' or worse yet a personal assault on someone's character? Get a life.

I agree. It's presumptuous to assume you can "bump" everyone from Blair House for ten days just because it would make your life easier. What's Laura Bush supposed to do, tell all of these organizations (some of which are probably non-profit) that the events they've been planning for months will have to be cancelled? What if the Bushes were coming in and requested to move into Blair House early? We'd never hear the end of their audacity. I voted for Obama, by the way. Let's just be evenhanded.

This may all be true but how much need for intensive, massive security do YOU have?

He lived in a one bedroom apartment (might have even been an efficiency) that has since caught fire. The Secret Service told him to stop staying there when he was a candidate. Michelle wouldn't stay there when she was in town even before he was a candidate. It was a dump.

Not to mention HE IS GOING TO BE THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES!!! A one bedroom with wife and two kids. Can you imagine?

I think it doesn't hurt to ask -- Don't fault the Obamas for doing that. But if the Bushes don't want to move the events, that's their business. I'm sure the Obamas can find an alternative that will meet their needs for a short time.

I am sure they can pay for a nice hotel)

The media is making this out to be worse than it really is. Bush has been gracious through the transition and Laura strikes me as the type of person who would want to make things easy for the Obamas. What are they supposed to do with the people who already made plans at the Blair House?

And I'm an Obama supporter by the way.

Isn't the White House itself large enough to put up a family of four as guests (along with a few extra Secret Service agents that come with the package)?

Have you ever hosted out of town guests in your home the last 10 days before your moved out and relocated?

Obama asked, was turned down for good reason, lets move on. I am sure they - the Obamas - are not obsessing about this complete non-issue.

Yes, maybe that is why some folks are receiving emails from the Obama campaign still asking for $$ (see the What's the Deal posting)

Yes, but you and I (as taxpayers) will be paying for the increased difficulties of protecting them in a more difficult setting than Blair House would have been. Furthermore, it is my understanding that the events scheduled at Blair House are farewell parties for White House staff. There are other places to hold those, even within The White House complex.

The Blair House is huge. I believe I read 14 bedrooms? So, you're telling me they couldn't let a family of FOUR stay there? They have many other options to hold the "reported" farewell parties.

Maybe they did have other options - before the invites went out and the caterers were hired. But it is a day late and a dollar short. It isn't a question of enough space - it is a question of security. The Secret Service I imagine is not too fond of guarding the first family in a home (residence anyway) where there are guest and vendors (caterers, rentals, bands, DJ's, etc) scheduled to be coming and going.

This appears to me to be the anti-Bush crowd looking anyplace for a fight - not the Obama's or their staff.
