I really am sick of safeway and giant.
A quick trip to the grocery store involves wasting time picking through the entire pile of crappy vegetables and produce to find the few good pieces. The staff is terrible and I have never seen all lanes open. I also gave up asking for where things are because the staff has no clue. Contrast this wegmans or whole foods. What is wrong with the management at these companies? Do they not care? Are they hiring people that don't care? |
My husband has given up on fruit from both of the mentioned chains. He claims it's worth it to spend the extra $$ at WF because he doesn't have to pick through, nothing gets spoiled / wasted at home. I still find that fruit in season is delicious no matter the store, but if he's willing to go to WF to buy the fruit so I don't have to, that's OK too

| The Giant near me is excellent. |
Safeway on Sangamore is the worst in this regard. Crystal and Joe are great, but they need to hire about 8 more full time cashiers. |

What, the first thread you started on this wasn't popular enough? I bet you're the person who stands there for 10 minutes trying to find that one piece of produce without a single blemish...guess what lady, fresh organic produce sometimes doesn't look perfect. You're the reason we have glassy looking squash, and fat round tasteless tomatoes.
Shop where you want, or open your own store. Me, I'll keep shopping at Giant, Trader Joes, Moms, and the farmers markets. |
| I kind of like Giant, except for the produce. The Giant on Arlington rd in Bethesda has the worst produce-- the potatoes are sprouting if not moldy, and the selection isn't great either. |
Sorry I am a new poster the other thread got me thinking. When I go to whole foods or wegmans I don't ever have to pick through but at safeway and giant all pieces look like they are bruised or about to rot. |

What is shocking to me is that the walmart in tysons actually has the freshest produce near mclean for the best price. I thought I would never say that.
The other place that has good produce are the asian grocery stores but not because the quality is better than safeway or giant but because they move the product faster. |
| There have been like 17 posts about this. Enough already. |
| Does anyone think that the union component causes the store to be bad? |
no, I'm happy to shop at a store with union labor. |
| 2nd asian markets here. They are also great for finding hard-to-find produce and spices. I like L A Mart and Fresh World in springfield area |
| I have not had this experience. Safeway in Belle Haven works for me. |
Can you name a union grocery store that compares to wegman? |
| The Safeway in Laurel is pretty poor, but the Safeway in Greenbelt, which was renovated about 5 years ago is still pretty good. The Safeway in Bowie is pretty good. It varies from location to location, but the older ones are a little listless. The ones that have had some renovations relatively recently are still good for a few years. |
