| I am looking for a home in these two zips. Any idea on housing costs, schools, distance to Georgetown iU? |
| What kind of house are you looking for? I believe N Arlington is more expensive than Bethesda 20814 and is much much closer to GU. Do you work at GU? |
| Arlington definitely closer to GU. Otherwise it depends very much on whether you're a Virginia or Maryland kind of person. |
N Arl is closer to Georgetown and more prestigous than 20814 which sits near the 270 interchange; the homes are more attractive up near the Chain Bridge than 20814 and more expensive too. |
Other parts of Bethesda might be closer to GU and have nicer housing stock. 20818 near Cabin John is real nice...sort of a poor mans Palisades. |
And no need to cross the Chain Bridge which might save time...except that Canal Road in DC can be a mess...but you can use other routes into Georgetown |
Although that might be one of the nicest drives in the whole area. |

Right now, inventory will be pretty low in both places. I tend to think housing prices and housing stock are pretty similar in the two areas - you pay for the good schools and the proximity to Metro (or pay less for the houses farther from metro.) I think the commute to GU would be easier from 22207 - I live there and it's a pretty straight shot to Gtown down route 29 and over the key bridge. (though it gets congested during normal rush hour.) Or if you're very far North, you could take Chain Bridge over, depending on where you're going and if you want to avoid M St., but that gets congested too, with folks coming in from MD.
Depending on what you want, you're looking at a minimum of probably $700K in 22207 - tear-downs in my neighborhood (Country Club) are going for about $650K. Some folks think that area of MD is prettier than Arlington - and parts are. But there are a lot of beautiful homes on beautiful streets near me that a lot of the haters probably haven't seen because they're not main roads. I'm in Arlington because my first job out of college was in Arlington. I could just as easily have settled in MontCo and been just as happy with it. Many realtors are licensed in both states and could do a dual search for you - my friend Katie Wethman (Keller Williams) could do that for you. |
The 270 interchange is not real pretty. Neither is Pooks Hill. |
| 20814 has a big chunk of downtown Bethesda (including east Bethesda) fwiw. |
| We're happy in 20814, but I wouldn't want to commute to Georgetown from here. Google maps says it's 8+ miles and at least 26 minutes (from my address), but I'm guessing it could take twice that long at rush hour. |
Downtown Bethesda is nice, new and gleamy - I love the shopping; but I can't help but feel that the Rosslyn to Ballston corridor has much of the same to offer -- and is closer to Key Bridge. |
I think both areas have similar demographics - Bethesda has more apartments, hence the slightly lower income levels from 22207 - but by and large it is a matter of preferences. Both counties have great services and both border NW DC...in both areas, a 1950s rambler with 1,500 sq feet will cost you $700K plus so be prepared to pay. |
| Pools Hill is the very northern edge of 20814, which also encompasses all of downtown Bethesda. |
| We live in 22201 and it only takes us 7 min driving tons to get to our investment property in Georgetown. It's very close. Depending on traffic and East or West Village either Memorial or key Bridge. Canal RD can be a nightmare. |
