Looking for the recipe (powdered sugar, milk, butter? add cocoa if chocolate?) that hardens, that tastes goods, will hold mini m&m's and sprinkles and stacks relatively well in a kids cookie exchange. Thanks!
Mix lemon juice with powered sugar until it's brushable. It tastes great and hardens evenly.
(If you think the flavor is too strong you can cut it with water)
I like this one: http://www.food.com/recipe/vegan-eggless-royal-icing-404594. There are a lot of versions with eggs, but they sort of freak me out. I think you could use regular milk if you wanted.

I used a sugar cookie glaze recipe from the King Arthur flour website. It has 2 tbsp of corn syrup. I think that helps it get a little shiny? I did add about a tsp of vanilla as well. I sifted the sugar first so probably ended up with more than the original amount so I did need more milk. It sets up fairly quickly but leave them out overnight for it to harden, before stacking or anything.

Great point on the corn syrup. Also, I made this once when I hadn't thought to buy corn syrup, and was able to sub hot water and cane sugar for the corn syrup (found the proportions by asking Chef Google). Have fun!
We always do egg white and powdered sugar, guess that is called Royal Icing? Pure white, hardens perfectly. Love it.
You can use meringue powder if worried about raw eggs.
