I'm hoping to be starting a new job soon at a federal agency in Hyattsville. We might buy a house in University Park, and then I could walk to work while my husband takes the car for the day. Greenwood school looked attractive because they are conveniently located to my work and I could take my daughter and pick her up every day and just walk home with her.
I'm aware of the long wait list and have also heard that it is an extremely unorganized place. This kind of discussion was all back in 2010/2011, though. Have things changed for them now in 2013? Does anybody have experience with them currently? Is the director the same from 2010/2011? Are there any other options that are walkable from University Park or the PG Plaza area? I have heard of St. Jerome's and the place at the National Archives site, but both of those would require a car to pick up my daughter and my husband might not be back early enough to get her. Or is public transportation decent enough that I could go get her from these locations? Thanks! |

You might join the UP playgroup listserv and ask the folks there.
http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/UPplaygroup/info My friends in UP are super happy at Greenwood. I don't know the wait list situation, but being a fed should help. Other friends in that area rave about Heritage in Hyattsville, but I think that's a bit of a hike from the metro. http://www.heritagechildcare.org/ Numerous buses go up and down route 1 (seriously, like 4 different lines - DC, PG, UMD, special rt 1 shuttle) , so St. Jerome's would be very accessible that way. |
| St. Matthews on Nicholson. Old building, but teachers have been there for forever!!! Love!!! |
| One of the federal agencies that supports Greenwood is scheduled to move within a year. Although there are probaly enough children in the area to support the center, if the agency moves out of the area, Greenwood will loose a significant sponsor. Hopefully, the agency will choose to move to one of the buildings surrounding Greenwood. |

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! This is very helpful.
Is the director at Greenwood new, or has she been there for several years? My agency is the one that may move elsewhere in PG county. Apparently any movement has probably been pushed back to 2015. I agree--I hope they stay in the area! |
| My understanding is that the Greenwood director has been there for 30-some years. They have a volunteer non-profit board of directors. You should give her a call and ask! |
| The director has been there for about 35 years. This is not your typical corporate-type center where everything is shiny and new, but the people are wonderful and the atmosphere is warm and loving. To me, that is what is most important. We live in UP and love it, BTW. |
| Does anyone know how difficult it is to get into Greenwood? |
| I was told the wait list was 1.5 yrs for the Infant room, so I ended up enrolling my DD at Heritage Child-care Center. |
| PP - are you happy with Heritage? |
|
yes! the director and teachers are very loving and caring. Many of the teachers are bilingual, so DC gets exposed to learning spanish as well. My child seems happy and seems to like his teachers.
another plus is that tuition is much more affordable than other daycares in the area. |
