School year cut offs are going to be approved and it’s already been decided now is soccer just has to just stamp yes. They will push this mandate to each governing league to start when they want which will be spring 25 or by Fall 26 at the latest.

ECNL has already had talks about going with Grad year but don’t want to spook anyone which is why they’ve gone quiet as far as posting anything official. More than likely ECNL will allow the non high school kids to shuffle around for spring as long as they are rostered on an ECNL team with that club already.

Also ECNL doesn’t want to deal with date constraints so will allow waiver systems for each team/kid to apply for a waiver and explain why they were held back or started late or whatever. Each team can only have 2-3 kids on waivers per team from what I understand. And ECNL will not approve everyone’s waivers. Your birth month will matter a lot also. Summer kids more likely to be approved then an August hold back kid.

This is how the GY held back parents are planning to sneak into leagues like ECNL.

If waivers for playing down happens it will immediately become corrupted and kill ECNL.

But that's OK everyone will see what's going on a switch leagues.

ECNL will allow the hold backs depending on their birthdate and why they had to repeat a grade and when they repeated a grade. Everyone won’t be approved. It won’t get out of hand. Everything will be okay.

Won't happen because it will force all the top clubs to recruit held back players. It would also force the top players to get held back to be a double standout on a team.

Parents hate waivers. It's one of the things that killed DA. (Allowing some players to play in HS via waivers) Everyone was pissed about it.

MLSN already allows biobanding, so player can play down and use the 12-23 months advantage to crush younger team. I am not surprised ECNL will copy MLSN's dirty trick on biobanding to make ECNL teams stronger at all costs.

MLS Acadamies don't care about biobanding. Those type of players are crash test dummies.

Then why do most clubs use the max amount of bio banding players?

Probably terrible MLS clubs and not MLS Acadamies.

Now imagine an entire team of biobanders. This is what GY people want.

Did you all see the survey?

It had a date cutoff. It did not have a grad year option. Even if the survey is a facade and the decision is already made, they wouldn't ask SY vs BY, get the feedback, and they say just kidding- we are going with none of the above, it's GY.

Did you see the post 4-5 previous where someone is saying that ECNL will allow playing down via waivers?

The private school people are looking for a way to get their held back kids into ECNL.

The biobanding players can only play down. It is a laughable joke to even mention the Academy team here.

I doubt any reputable MLS teams will use biobanding. It is not good for team chemistry. Possible only MLS team short on players or bad in general, that needs older players to help, I mean cheat.

So some Anonymous stranger on the message board said something it must be true. Wait until ECNL actually announces something.

Information coming out of ECNL Phoenix is the change will happen but it will not go into affect until Fall of 2026

According to the post you’re correct. And ECNL will allow it. So either hold your kid back or shut up and stop whining about it.

That’s what we are hearing down here in SOCAL league as well. But ECNL will still start Fall 25. The rest of the leagues will start Fall 26.

What is the point in delaying? I have a kid (non-ecnl) who will be a trapped 8th grader next year. So.she gets screwed by no fall season and losing her team the following year. Worst option possible. I'd rather they stay birth year than do this.

Delay to Fall 2026 feels like the worst of all worlds. The pain in this is almost entirely in the transition (and yes, I know, there are kids for whom this is confusing or worse) so either don't do it, because of transitional pain, or do it and get it over with.

Ripping off the bandaid is the perfect analogy for this.

Well ECNL will not delay it would only be the vast majority of teams to give clubs time to get things in place.

Too many clubs and leagues complaining that it’s short notice to start but will go along with it for Fall 26. I agree should just rip the bandaids off.

The good clubs will start a year early and play up and prepare for the future.
