I wonder whether anyone is prepared to share experiences/views/personal insights, of any kind.

What are you looking for exactly? My grandfather fled Germany during the Holocaust. Fortunately, he shared many stories. |
I like Jews, I like Germans. Those are my insights!

This is kind of a weird and random post. OP, could you explain a bit about what prompted your post, and where you see your post going? |
Strange question I know a lot of Jew germans ![]() |
Stop living in the past. |

What do you want me to say, that I hate Germans and they hate me? Well, turns out I don't. What crazy point of your own are you trying to prove? |
A German is from Germany. Germany is in Europe. Europe is a continent.
Jews live on all the continents. Europe is one of those continents. Germany is in Europe. Many Jews drive German cars. I don't know if many Germans drive Jewish cars. There are Germans in Israel. Israel is NOT Germany. Israel is not in Europe, but many Europeans live there. Some Israelis live in Europe. I am a white Jew American. Therefore I am European. Which means I was From the continent of Africa at one point. |
Yes, I agree and I tell my children not to judge Germans based on the past. But I'll be totally honest here. When I was in Germany 20 years ago on my Eurail tour, I was extremely unconfortable during the few days I spent in Germany. Irrational, yes, I know. |
I'm cool with Germans with one exception. Riding trains and subways in Germany and Austria creep me out. It has to do with hearing German spoken over the intercom to the passengers. I've just seen too many movies with Germans loading Jews onto rail cars.
Funny aside a German friend of mine was totally confused about all the sound of music hoopla on twitter last week. He tuned in to watch online and at the end with all the nazi flags on the stage at the musical festival he tweeted that the reason he doesn't know the story is because swastikas are banned in Germany and so the movie isn't shown. |
Fair question, and frankly I'm not quite sure myself. This is of course a relationship burdened by history. I find personalized discussions still tend to be a tad akward or, more likley, just don't take place. So I wonder whether in an anonymous forum one can discuss these issues more openly. What I'm interested in are issues such as: what's your view of today's Germany? Do you consider Germans generally decent people (but then how do you reconcile this with the holocaust) or not? For Jews with German-Jewish ancestry, do you feel that Germany is part of your family history? Have you been there - and if so what do you think - or not - would you be curious to go and what holds you back? Full disclosure: I'm German but have lived in the US for a long time. Happy to address questions in the other direction if there is interest. Btw, I don't want anyone to say anything. If you don't want to comment, don't. |
Jews are not really white...they are sort of white. Your ancestry is closer to Africa than you think: Reporting in the April issue of PLoS Genetics, the researchers found that modern day Jews can attribute about 3% to 5% of their ancestry to sub-Saharan Africans, and that the exchange of genes between Jews and sub-Saharan Africans occurred approximately 72 generations, or about 2,000 years, ago. I do not consider Germans to be generally decent. What they did was not decent. Tricking people into slaughter was a nasty nasty thing to do. Might have had an inch more respect if they had just come right out and said in clear language what they were going to do. Would never trust a German who told me to come and meet on a blind date, heck would not date a German. Would quicker meet with a mobster in a a blind alley. Always felt happy to be LEAVING Germany. The minute the plane took off, I said, ahhh. Oh, and I am not Jewish. |
