Newsweek Rankings snd Falls Church HS

Anonymous
Time to sir the pot again. A friend of mine recently sent me the link below from Newsweek. It is their high school rankings. Outside of Madison and TJ, very few of the schools highly regarded on this board, i.e. Langley, McLean, Woodson, etc. are on the list. Meanwhile, Falls Church Hivh School, which is perceived to be a "poor school" by readers of these boards is. I wonder why? Is there domething wrong with the methodology kr is FCHS actuslly much better thsn is commonly thought?

While George Mason HS is in Falls Church (the City of Falls Church), it is not the same as Falls Church HS (which is in the county of Fairfax) -- but I could see how you'd be confused. That said, I actually like FCHS b/c it is the smallest HS in FCPS and I value that a lot. It has a lot of FARMS and ESOL kids -- but that doesn't bother me much. I prefer a school with 1350 kids over a school that has 2400 kids. I'm sure there are teachers at FCHS that will take an interest in kids who want to excell.

Falls Church High School isn't on the list.

George Mason High School is, though, and it is located in Falls Church. It's an IB school of about 900 (mostly white upper-middle class) kids. Of course they do well.

You did not read far enough down the list. FCHS is #1202. It is ranked among the top 2000 high schoolss in America. The other more vaunted schoools are not on the list. I'll bet there are quite a few students from FCHS whomget full ride scholarships based on need, merit and demographics. I personall know three who received full rides at SLACs.

I wonder what happened, because when I look at the criteria, the stats, and the scores (I can find easily), schools like McLean and Langley do better than Madison- across the board (not significantly better, but still better). Madison is 146 on the list but McLean and Langley are not even on the list. It isn't FARMS kids as McLean has the same or slightly more than Madison as a %. It makes me wonder about the the accuracy of the list and what other schools across the country are also left off.

Plus, I think you are confusing George Mason HS with Falls Church HS. Falls Church HS did not make the list either. Madison and Robinson are the only FCPS that are not a Gov. School that made it.

Falls Church High School (FCPS) is on this list. Do a search of the list, type in Falls Church and you get both Mason and FCHS. No confusion here.

National high school rankings are worth what you pay to read them.

I think there the number is more in the 700 student range now, now that the 8th graders have been moved back down to the middle school....

I guess they were top shelf for 20 years and then just fell off this year. . . . Oh no, I wonder what will happen to my McLean property value?

Every McLean school is either a 9 or 10 on GreatSchools, and Langley and McLean were #2 and #4 in the state per the last US News rankings. Teardowns that went for $650K a few years ago are usually over $800K now.

Newsweek has already had some trouble in this area with their rankings. You'd think they would have been a little more careful this year. Doubtful that Langley would not have made the list. Definitely an error on Newsweek's part and I don't even desire to live in that area.

They also missed woodson and Oakton what a garbage list

George Mason and a few of the highly regarded Arlington schools are not on the US News list at all.

This is a numbers game, pure and simple. At the end of the day it's just statisticians deciding how they want to weight different factors (SAT scores, grad rates, etc) and they all approach it slightly differently
