Which type of pack n play should I get for newborn bassinet--confused?

Anonymous
It seems like going with a Pack N Play to serve as a newborn bassinet would be a good idea. I'm a FTM and researching baby gear. There are several types of Pack N Plays and I am confused by which one would be best. I've seen one with a sleeper and changer on top of the pack N play, and then I've seen one that doesn't have either of those and just has a large mattress on top of the playyard. Which would be better for a newborn? Or is there another aspect I'm not considering? I am confused by all the baby gear options and features. Thanks!

This is really all you need in a pack and play, the extra are just that extra you don't really need.

We used the Graco Travel Lite with stages. I have a long baby who outgrew it in 3 months. We then bought a regular pack and play with bassinet. But the cheap one, the newborn napper thing is unnecessary and unsafe. For both we bought pack and play mattresses. The reviews on amazon will tell you which mattress to buy. It is a must have item.

I have the PNP that 19:08 linked to. That's what I mean by "the cheap one".

Yup. My 3.5 week old is sleeping in this in our room until we move him to his crib.

I used the Fisher Price rock n play. I think it was cozier for a newborn, better than a pack n play (and smaller).

PP is right, model posted would work well. The key thing is you want the elevated mattress option- it would be crazy to try to lift a NB from floor level. We have one with the mapper/changer and we did use the mapper/changer till she outgrew it. Not necessary but nice to have but a few more bucks

I'd also get something like the graco or boppy liners to prevent messes when you change them there.

Totally agree with this. The baby can't sleep in the bassinet with the changer on there and you aren't going to take it on and off to use it. The basic pnp is all you need. We just put a changing pad on our dresser when the baby was still in our room.

I had the basic one in our living room -- wish I had the changer on it, as it would have been convenient. Changing in the pack and play bassinet was hard on my back, and post C-section I wasn't always up for the stairs!

The other side of the changer is a napper intended for baby to sleep in. You don't need to remove anything.

Agree with this. I had the changer because I thought I'd use it and the newborn napper thing because I couldn't get the changer without it. I didn't use either and now I have to put those junky things somewhere because they don't collapse into the PNP transport bag the way the crib (and also the bassinet back when) does. I absolutely would NOT use the newborn napper thing for any reason at all. That thing looks really dangerous.

Get the cheap one.

I wouldn't have used our Pack and Play bassinet for a newborn. It was too saggy in the middle. (If you're confused like I was when shopping for it, I'm talking about what Graco calls the "bassinet", which is the same size as the pack and play, but elevated towards the top).

I did use it once ds grew out of his little bassinet; however I never once used the changer. We didn't have the napper.

I had a separate bassinet for ds to sleep in the first few months; it had a much more solid/level mattress than the pnp bassinet mattress.

+1. Used the changer like twice and kept the napper off since it looked dangerous/had to be removed anyway. Loved the bassinet feature (got the one with 3 stages).

Us too. We have a borrowed pack and play and he sleeps much better in the rock and play. Plus, we can move it from room to room even with him in it.
I'm hoping he get used to the pack and play so maybe moving him to the crib is easier but the rock and play does the trick (and we don't rock/vibrate it)
