ANy good preparation material for Cogat tests?

Anonymous
My kid will be taking the Cogat test early next year and wanted him to take some initial tests to see where he stands and if pursuing a GT education is appropriate. Where can I get some good test material to begin with? Do not want to spend too much money in this economy.

can you do search in this forum? this has been already answered a few times.

You may want to try Mercer publishing.

Don't spend money on test prep. Read. Do puzzles and brain teasers. Talk about all kinds of topics and help your child to learn how to think. Play non-computer based math and memory games when you are driving in the car. Play legos. Play Minecraft. Sign up for music lessons.

All of these will help your child to develop their brain in a much more effective way than wasting money on test prep books.

Mercer publishing, music, legos, minecraft are all good.

CogatPrep app on the iPad, think I paid $2.99 for a full length Cogat test. Should give an idea as to where your kid stands with respect to the actual test scores

FCPS is aware of this. That is why there is a FxAT; also look at the threads of the kids with good cogAT's that did not get into AAP. Prepping for the CogAT may improve the score, but will not make a difference after that. It probably will not help DC get into AAP. You would be better off spending the time interacting with the kid, teaching them about the world. Just my opinion. But I am right.

Hilarious. But actually, I agree with you that prepping is a waste of time. However, the test in previous years (maybe not since the FxAT, but the years just before it) has been thoroughly gamed.

I will not be spending money on test prep. It's free. Thus, no wasted coin.

We did the mercer book and my child reported that the examples in the book were much easier than the actual test. the book at least gave her a perspective on what kind of questions were going to be asked since they were not ones she was used to seeing so in that respect I am glad we used the book.

We shall skip the legos and minecraft for mercer. Perhaps next summer!
