I’m surprised they can demand that at this point. He’s a private citizen.

They can request the tax returns of any private citizen. The hangup before was that Trump was saying that the rules for private citizens don't apply to him. That's incorrect but he succeeded in dragging everything out for years and years.

The house ways and means committee can not request the return of any private citizen. That’s false.

They can if they are conducting an investigation and the Justice Department orders that the returns be turned over to them as part of a subpoena in the investigation.

But...but...but... Trump is still under audit by the IRS and couldn’t possibly share his returns with the likes of Congress.

He apparently thinks arguments like that can still fly.

Every modern US president HAS turned over their returns, voluntarily.

Trump was never presidential.

He wouldn't be fighting this so ferociously if there wasn't something in them.

This has been a smoking gun since he was running for President.

The House Ways and Means Committee requested his returns when he was President. DOJ and others have since found that request was wrongfully obstructed by Mnuchin and others. That obstruction should be overturned and the original request honored regardless of whether he's now a private citizen.

When the accounting firm fires the client

10 years of accounting "that cannot be relied upon"

That seems....bad

So Trump's longtime accounting and/or tax preparation firm just fired him.

Just now. Because the NY AG said he was guilty of fraud. And they agree.

That seems....like fraud.

The fact is that you typically have until a given date around April 15th of each year to file the previous year's taxes. In certain circumstances you can requests extensions, up to 6 months to file. If you file incorrectly, you have up to 3 years to file an amended tax return. Since this covers 2011-2020, that means that tax years 2011-2018 are all outside of the amendment period and that any errors, are considered fraudulent.

At this point, unless Trump can show explicitly to the IRS that any errors in the 2011-2018 tax years are in the government's favor, that constitutes felony tax fraud.

Hopefully the NY DA will be aggressive in asking for court judgment on this case.
