We live in an apartment in DC and have one 16 month old. We will not be having more kids.
Have to buy a new car and torn between a mid size sedan (accord) and a mini-SUV (CRV). Which car is better with a kid? I am trying to guess what kid stuff/activities/play dates would "fit" better with an Accord or CRV. Do kids start taking up more room as they get older, enough to justify picking a vehicle with more trunk storage? If you have only one kid and one car, is an Accord size car big enough? If you've wished for a bigger vehicle, why/when? (They cost about the same.) Thanks! |
I have 2 kids and a sedan works just fine.
I have 2 kids and no plans on getting a bigger car any time soon.
Of course a sedan is big enough.
I had a Civic with 2 kids for years.
I have one kid and an Acura TSX, and it's never been an issue. That said, I have to take one wheel off my BOB Ironman stroller if I want to put it in the trunk with my golf clubs and my maclaren umbrella stroller. Otherwise, I can fit 5 passengers in there, or fewer and more stuff. the stuff gets smaller after the stroller years.
Wow. Of course a sedan is big enough.
Are you kidding, OP?
2 kids with prius and perfectly happy
OP here, yes, I know a sedan can be big enough. But since I have the option of sedan vs. mini-SUV, looking for people's preferences and experiences.
2 kids and a Honda civic. When car shopping it seemed to me like the trunk space in the civic was more usable than in a CRV - yes the CRV has overall more space but it is upright and you are unlikely to pile things to the ceiling so I thought the horizontal and separate trunk space in the civic would work better for carrying gear. I did have the car seat in the side versus center seat even with one as it is hard to access the center seat due to the low ceiling. Have not wished for a bigger car.

If you have one kid a Mini Cooper is enough.
Do you plan on going on day-long car trips with a week's supply of diapers and baby food? |
Then why does your subject say "is a sedan big enough?" We have two cars - a sedan and a CRV. It's nice to have a little extra space with the CRV but it's definitely not necessary. I would just test drive your two choices and see which one you like better. |
Of course- and mine is a hybrid Camry, so half of the trunk space is taken up with batteries. And honestly, depending on how much driving you do (we do LOTS of driving to see family), CRVs and such are not all that comfortable. There's not nearly as much room leg room in my sister's CRV as there is in our Camry. She can lug some more stuff in the trunk area, but our passengers have a more comfortable ride.
We only have one kid and didn't buy any special car. We just shoved her in the tiny car we've got.
