Baby names & social class

Anonymous
The Nameberry site offers up a list of names that they specifically define as "yupster" -- basically names that are popular with young urban professionals. Since DCUM seems to be somewhat obsessed with name choices and social class, I thought some might find this interesting. The boys' list is below. I'll post the girls' version in a few minutes.

So what say you DCUM? Do you agree that these names are predominantly used by the young, college-educated and well-paid? Are your kids' names on this list?

Nah, that's hipster, not yuppie.

Not so sure about Hunter on the boys side or Brooke and Addison for girls, but seems pretty accurate to me other than that.

I'd say Barnaby, Ike, Truman, Kitty, Maude and Nell are hipster, not yupster.

I do find that DC skews a bit more toward the traditional on the name front. I am originally from Berkeley, where, although we don't actually name our children Moon Unit or Rainbow, it is a goal not to be one of 5 Isabellas.

Many of my friends here, however, have clung to names in the top ten, the Apostles, or the major and minor prophets. Sometimes, it's to name a child after a beloved grandparent, but I think some of it is extreme caution on the future Supreme Court Justice front.

Well I am in a DC moms group and our babies were all born earlier this year. Out of 8 baby names in our group, 4 are on that list, including my childs.

Crap. My daughters name is on the list.

Hmm. Both my kids traditional (Biblical) names are there.

Agree. When it comes to names, this area is exceptionally conservative.

It's a long list dumb dumbs. It's probably including the most popular names in most middle to high income families.
