Baby names & social class

Upper class, white and wealthy/celebrity/famous family's names have always trickled their way down the food chain.
Aiden is white and yuppy today, but give it a couple of years and all of those names will be popular at the lower income / minority level.

:Clutches pearls: You mean a brown person might share my DD's name? Dear God, what will I do?

Seems about right- there are a few missing but pretty much 90% of the kids under 5 I know (which I suppose are all the kids I know) in the area are on that list.

I wonder how they define "young" in the context of young, urban professional. Those in urban areas tend to have their kids a bit older but I think DCUM is skewed even in representing this area as far as age of mothers with infants. Do they think of people pushing 40 as "young urban professionals" more around 30? late 20s?

Most yuppies have moved on from Jacob at this point. It's just too popular. I think Elizabeth is a lot more popular in DCUM circles than in other parts of the country if for no other reason than the fact that this area is so conservative.

Am actually a little surprised to see Aiden still on this list. No one I know is using it any more. To me, Aiden is in the same category with Jacob.

Yeah, to me Aiden is like Jayden nowadays. Kind of reserved for the teen mom crowd..

I see several missing that are common in DC circles. Also, where are all of the trendy last names used as first names?

ACTUALLY, Aiden trickled up, not down.

Aiden is part of that Aiden/Bradyn/Cayden/Hayden/Jaden/Zaiden phenomenon that gripped the middle and lower class starting around 10-12 years ago. Even-GASP-minority children were named these types of names.

If it is just now hitting the upper middle/upper class, then Aiden is definitely a trickle up kind of name.

Benjamin and William are glaring omissions if we're talking DC. Also there's no Abigail, no Penelope no Evelyn. I personally haven't heard them in DC, but I'm surprised not to see Piper and Harper on the list.

But, I am surprised to see Laura, Helen and Miranda on that list. And who the heck is naming their kid Ned?

All four of my kids names are on that list. Plus my two other favorite names that I didn't get a chance to use. It's a pretty long list and I imagine it includes many of the all-around top baby names right now. Though I will say, that one of my kids names is very, very uncommon. Never heard of another child with that name. Not sure how it even made it onto the list.

Many of my friends here, however, have clung to names in the top ten, the Apostles, or the major and minor prophets. Sometimes, it's to name a child after a beloved grandparent, but I think some of it is extreme caution on the future Supreme Court Justice front.

what do people name their kids in berkely?

How does Nameberry know whether the parents went to college and what their income is?

50s, nonprofessional, partially college educated, solidly middle-class, single mom here all three kids' names are on the lists. All have grown up attending private schools on FA and are now attending elite colleges.

The class below my daughter at daycare has both a Piper and a Harper.
