What are doctors making in this area now? I'm trying to help a family friend choose a specialty.
Gastroenterology Orthopedic Surgeons OBGYNs Cardiologists Family Practice |
| I think the better question is after student loans and malpractice insurance, how much is really left over. |
No student loan problem here. That's why family practice is an option. |
| your family friend, who i presume is in and about to graduate from medical school, has asked a person who is not a doctor what his specialty should be? |
| Neuroradiology pays well so tell your friend to get on that. |
|
I would ask what they value, time with family or money. There are a few that have both (ROAD specialties) but those are difficult to get into. From your list above, in terms of earning potential it varies as well based on the sub specialty (ex interventional vs ep vs general cards) but ortho would be the most lucrative followed by GI.
Is your friend military and that's why they don't have loans? I'm a fed physician and make $150k, but come home every night in time for dinner, no call and no weekends and I enjoy my work so its worth it for me. |
No OP, but why do you care? My sister has no loans as my parents paid for it all. Not everyone has loans. |

3)Gastroenterology 2) Orthopedic Surgeons 4)OBGYNs 1) Cardiologists 5)Family Practice **depends highly on the practice joined. High-volume practices in any specialty make bank. 1,2,3,4 are all not family friendly. Think 80-100 hour weeks on average. On call, etc. |

Dermatology.

MD here.
This post can't be real. Your family friend is choosing between VASTLY different specialties based solely on income and asking a non-medical person for this information? Right. Not only are those specialties vastly different in practice, there is a huge spread in length of training between them (3 to 10 years). |
+1 I ask my mechanic for legal advice! Uhhhhh |
Thank you. I was going to write that you pick the specialty that you are interested in -- period. My thoracic surgeon might make 300K, but he is at the hospital often from 8 am till late int the evening... |
Even worse, they are selecting it based on salary when no debt has to be taken into account. |
| Anecdotal data point: my mom was internal medicine (not known as a highly paid specialty - far from it!) and when she retired a couple of years ago was making about $260K at Kaiser. |
| 250 to 400 |
