Did your DC get a D in a class senior year and still get into college?

If so, where? My kids D is in English, if that matters....

My kid never got a D. sorry.

I got a D after getting in.

not before tho.

Did he apply EA or ED? Then the colleges might not see that grade.

Did he get all As in other classes, or Cs. Did the grade go from an A last year to a D this year? Those things may matter.

This is a quarter grade, not a semester grade. You have time to jump in and help your DC pull that grade up. Throw some tutoring at the situation. Do you know why your DC got a D?

He got a lot of Cs junior year ( and failed one class) so we didn't want to apply ED so he could show some better grades. This quarter he got a mix, one A, 2 Bs, one C and this D. Hopefully he can pull the D up before the end of the semester, but I believe it still will be on his transcript.

It really doesn't sound like he is ready for college next year. He is struggling academically and not turning work in. Those issues will multiply in college.

Is it a lack of effort? Poor work habits? Or is he working hard and for the most part this is how he does academically when he works hard.

He may need an extra year to pull up with grades or an extra year working just to mature or a year of community college.

Sometimes not going straight into college out of high school is the better option that will lead to longer term success.

Your son can absolutely be accepted to a college - there are colleges for all kinds of students. Smaller state schools might be where you want to look...but I have to agree that taking a year off to mature could benefit your son and lead to greater academic success in the college years.

He might be on academic probation, but it its a mid tier state school like Salisbury or Frostburg, it's probably not going to be a big deal.

Sounds like the D is the least of his problems on his transcript. The junior year grades are pretty important.

What school system? MCPS does not show quarter grades on the transcript, not sure about other systems.

He can get into college if he wants to go. There are over 3000 colleges in the US. Just pick one that's not in the top 100 or so. So that leaves about 2900 colleges that will work out for him. And community college for a year or two is always worth considering.

How about a junior college like NOVA for 2 years. Maybe he needs a therapist, is he depressed?
