Did your DC get a D in a class senior year and still get into college?

Hopefully he can pull the D up before the end of the semester, but I believe it still will be on his transcript.

You can ask you kid's guidance counselor but our kids' HS transcripts do not show quarterly grades (and do not show midterm grades for full year courses), only the final grade for the class. The one exception is senior year where the first semester grades are sent. (Another exception is if you're applying early senior year, the school can sent the first quarter grades upon request but this is not automatic or typical.)

I failed my last semester of college and got a scholarship to a good law school. Your child will survive.

He didn't turn in a paper.

That sounds like some kind of self-sabatoge. Its one thing to turn in a paper late, its another not to turn it in at all. Is there something going on with him? Depression? Substance abuse? Or is he ambivalent about even going to college?

Does your son have ADHD?

More like OP"s son is a boy. Boys are notorious for not turning stuff in.

I agree that this is a sign, that he might not be ready for college. If in VA, I know several kids who went the NOVA route and did fantastic. One got into William and Mary after just one year at NOVA.

Whatever you decide make sure it is coming from the child and not you! That's the ONLY way it will work.

Meet with the college counselor

I slept through a final my senior year and got a d. I went to college and did well. I'm not saying there's no chance it's not a sign and you shouldn't talk to a counselor. . . But I think there's a pretty good chance this is a minor issue associated with being a maturing young man.

I got an F first semester senior year for not turning in a paper. I got into a top 25 university - to this day I have no idea how or why. I did fine. Your child will likely do fine too.

That said, I would look at his junior year grades as well as this D and think. Is he a smart kid who is underperforming? If so, why? Would he benefit from a gap year? I think this is a good idea for a lot of kids who are not focussed on college yet. Is he a middle of the pack student? Should he be looking at 2d tier schools? Is there something else going on unrelated to school or at least to academics? Is he otherwise happy and involved in other things besides academics either at school or outside of school?

Have faith, OP. He'll do fine.

My nephew got really bad grades in his junior and senior year at a top public high school in MD. However, he did get a few good grades here and there and he got very high test score. He is lazy. He has some activities. His parents hired a top college counselor and he applied to a variety of schools. He got into some and he is now attending Arizona State University.

PP -- He is happy. ASU is a big nice school. He would not have been happy at a local communtiy college. He wanted to go away to a big school and ASU is not too hard to get into..He also got into a few other big state schools but not some other ones.

if in the first quarter? no, that's very bad.
If after the college apps have been sent in, then probably not so big a deal. Will be regarded as a sign of senioritis
so what kind of colleges are we talking about here? Harvard, U.Va, Mary Washington?
