One way or another the results of the boundary and feeder system changes are going to mean more inbounds students at Deal and tighter adherence to its core geography and feeders. We're not dumb.
Some of us will get in by luck but many won't. This could be an especially drastic changes for those of us just across the Park from upper Ward 3. For those of us likely to get left outside looking in - what do you want in a middle school? |
|
Personally, I would like a G&T program. An overall strong middle school with targeted advanced offerings, so that G&T kids are not wholly isolated from the general student body would be a draw. I am interested in strong arts and humanities as well as math.
And if it were done well, I would consider sending my children that are IB for Deal and likely to stay so based on any rational geographic basis. That is one way to pull kids from across the city and relieve the pressure on Deal. |

I think the question is, what can they throw in to sweeten the bitter pill and make it easier to swallow?
Enhancements to existing schools? New schools? If so, where? |
Not sure. DCPS keeps on emphasizing he importance of diversity in the process. Pressure from council on this too. Possible they will keep some EOTP areas in bounds for deal to support this, or otherwise come up with something quite different ... some variation where in boundary families don't get all the first preference seats perhaps. |
| What's the reference to Center City? |
| By center city I meant Wards 1 and 4, parts of Ward 2 and slivers of Wards 5 and 6 but not far north or west of Park Ward 4. I also tried to be vague so that people wouldn't have a boundary dispute about a boundary dispute. |
| Center City is a charter school that inlcudes a middle school. |
This sounds great but a true G/T program is just not going to happen in DC. Although it would work miracles in keeping high SES families committed to upper grades in DCPS. Kaya is just too short sighted and her hands are tied politically to do anything that would be percieved to be catering to white families. |
| I think people need to believe that being crossed out of deal you can get a Deal-equivalent. Maybe Gifted and Talented would do that. Maybe run an IB program out of an all-new McFarland or Shaw middle school or at the Meyer site. |
Sorry. No disrespect. Only lack of familiarity. Very sorry. |
| Reality is folk need to work from what is there ... CHEC, Cardozo, Roosevelt, Hardy, Francis Stevens & McKinley. Otherwise its private, charter or exit to VA/MA. Who really expects that they are going to create a new MS program to meet the needs of middle class / higher SES households? Of the DCPS above I could imagine FS and Hardy, perhaps McK, as possibilities within the next 5 years. |
| ... VA/MD ... |

support Hardy.
It will become a great alternative to Deal if given more support. http://www.hardyms.org |
I think Hardy is great and would be all for it - but for the fact that it's in Georgetown/far, far away from our northern homeland. Something as good as Hardy somewhere on the 16th commuter line would be great. |

Are you participating in the Focus groups and working groups they are doing as part of this process? While I am guessing there are government people reading these boards, people participating in the groups advocating these changes might be more effective.
