Packing sandwiches for kids' lunches at night...

Anonymous
So I have been waking up early to make my kids lunches, and it is making me crazy (the mornings need no help in being chaotic). I was not making them the night before for fear that the bread would get soggy with the mayo or mustard on it. Do you guys do it at night? Is this not an issue? I feel like it would make my life a lot more sane to do one less thing in the morning.

I do everything BUT the sanwich at night.

Lightly butter the bread, it acts as a seal, then apply mayo or mustard. Store in the fridge overnight.

You could put the mustard or mayo in between the sandwich fillers or between the sandwich filler and lettuce. That way, they don't touch the bread.

Me again. Or put them between the sandwich filler and cheese.

I make sandwiches every night and this is not an issue. Mustard goes right on the bread. Sandwiches are fine the next day.

I make sandwiches every night too with no issues.

My mother did this my entire childhood and it drove me bananas. Butter in peanut butter sandwiches, butter in bologna sandwiches, butter in tuna sandwiches .... I love my mother but I wished wished wished I could have normal sandwiches with normal condiments. She always said, "you don't want the bread to dry out, do you?"

I think it was 5th or 6th grade before it occurred to me to make my own. Somehow, she never challenged me to do it earlier.

P.S. I agree with the "go ahead, not an issue" posters above. Though for some reason I'm still getting up early and doing it in the morning. I guess I have the routine down and don't want to move that chore up to the previous evening. After bedtime is my time.

Go ahead--not an issue!

Here is a great system for making sandwiches ahead of time while keeping all the elements in top shape: http://themuffinmyth.com/2010/09/07/the-sandwich-system/

I just wish my kid would eat sandwiches!

+1

Premade sandwiches are gross IMO.

I make sandwiches the night before. PB & J..no difference from a night in the fridge. Cold Cuts get tomato or condiment in the middle..served on a roll so maybe that gets less soggy. No complaints. I only cut fruit and do water bottles with ice in the am.

I never do it the night before -- they get soggy or the bread dries out.

Maybe try it for your lunch and see what you think. If you think it is fine, your kids will probably feel the same.

Personally, I can't stand premade sandwiches bc of the soggy bread issue you noted plus cold bread grosses me out. I vote "pack everything but" the night before.
