An article from yesterday's Fairfax Times, which discusses (albeit briefly) some of the demographic changes that have taken place in FCPS. Again, it is important in any growing, ever-changing metropolitan area to evaluate the needs of its residents, and innovate in ways that best educate and advance all of FCPS students.

Are the article writers blind?? The increase is due to ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION. Which is well-tolerated in this area because apparently people don't mind paying crazy taxes for all the things illegal immigration means, cost-wise.
Insanity. |
Agree, PP. They can't possibly all be here legally. |
The article says no such thing, please read more carefully.
The article says merely that Hispanic and Latino students now make up more than a quarter (26%) of the student population in public elementary schools in Fairfax County. |
I am wrong about the 26%, the article does not specify other than to say more than a quarter. |
The federal courts are clear on this, every resident student of a school district has the right to a public education, regardless of their immigration status. That is the law. |
put it to a vote |
Which trumps immigration law, I suppose? Those, too, are laws. Are we picking and choosing now? |

The students are here and unless they are being deported, they need an education. The Supreme Court agreed more than 30 years ago. |
Notice the percentage of farms always equals the percentage.
They need to determine if these students are consuming excessive resources. |
The FCPS report states that Hispanic students represent 25.0% of the elementary population and 23.6% of the total FCPS population as of 9/30/13.
If that bothers some whites so much, they should (1) have more kids, (2) ask the county to tear down the aging housing that not many people other than poor Hispanics want to live in these days; (3) elect local politicians who will aggressively seek to crack down on illegals and/or (4) move to North Arlington, which is jammed full of white families who have perfected the art of seeking out other white people for neighbors and then expressing their dismay at the lack of diversity in their 85% white elementary schools. It's not the fault of FCPS, however. Its mission is to teach all the kids who show up for an education. |
You are either new to the area or are pretty young. Illegal immigration was a big problem back in the 80's and 90's. The kids entering school now are the kids of those kids whose parents were illegal back then. In other words, the kids now are born here to parents who were born here. |
No suprise why there is a 140 million deficit, we are becoming California |
These are people who I admire --- can you imagine having to leave your home/family/country and risking your life with the hope of finding a menial, back-breaking job in a country where people insult you and where you don't speak the language? That's courage in my book and frankly, most of us are so soft we couldn't do the work or go the distance that these people have. You say you support "family values"???? well, it's the essence of "family values" to put your life on the line by moving to a foreign country so that you can provide food for your children. Have you ever considered how desperate YOU would have to be to leave your kids/spouse and risk being attacked just to try to find a job? Can you imagine how lonely and isolated it must be to not speak the language in a country where nothing is familiar? Try walking a mile in someone else's shoes. |
