How unusual is it for a third grader to score in the high 220s on both MAP-M and MAP-R? Both are 99%. We know this kid is bright, just trying to figure out if this is unusual or not. I should mention that he has never been to tutoring or had any advanced teaching in math (thanks 2.0) so I find getting so I find the math test impressive personally. Hope this does come off as bragging but I just really looking for information TIA. |
If it's the 99th percentile, then that means that 99% of third graders score lower than the kid with these scores. That's how unusual it is. |
Not OP here, but 99% of which third graders? Is this test given statewide? nationwide? |
He is likely to get into the HGC. You should apply. |
You can look the data up here.

By way of reference, my DD scored a 253 as a 3rd grader last year and, yes, is at the HGC. Not sure if high 220's is all that high in MoCo. |
My child was in the 230s as a third grader (at end of year, lower at beginning of year) and is at an HGC. Also, other children in 3rd grade class were accepted to HGC with lower MAP scores than my child received. |
My son scored 223 in 3rd grade on MAP-R and 231 on MAP-M. He didn't apply to HGC but probably would not have gotten in if he did. |
Why do you think that he wouldn't have gotten in? Also, was your son 223 at the end of 3rd grade? The OP's child's scores are very high for the beginning of 3rd grade. |
End of 3rd grade. I think 4th grade was 220 (yes, went down) and 236 for Fall but haven't seen from teacher yet. Our school only takes 2-3 and at least 4 others applying were better students. I would have been very surprised if DC would have been accepted over peers. Just being realistic. But that isn't why we didn't apply. DC would have gotten home too late for his travel sports practices and also he can sometimes struggle with behavior. In general, he just didn't want to go to HGC anyway. |
This is OP, we are going to apply to HGC but I was trying to get a feel for around here if these scores are really that high or not. I know nationwide they are in 99th percentile but I know we have a lot of smart kids around here.
Thanks for the helpful comments, snarky ones I could do without but sadly I expected them. |
Good Luck, sounds like you have a very smart kid!! |
I have a child who scored 228 on the MAP-M and 261 on the Map-R this Fall. Our school doesn't seem to be particularly wowed, so I'm assuming these scores aren't that meaningful. |
Are you at a very small school? 7 kids from our school were accepted last year. |
261 is extraordinarly high. |
