Exercising outdoors in the cold and avoiding dry skin?

Anonymous
How do you workout outdoors in the cooler months, and avoid getting dry skin? I exercise outside 3-4x a week, for about an hour each. I find that already, I'm getting dry patches on my legs, and itchiness.

I have dry/itchy legs to begin with and always moisturize immediately after getting out of the shower, but it seems to have hit sooner than usual, due to exercising outside this year. Aside from moisturizing and staying hydrated, how do you keep your skin from drying out in the cold (and often, the wind!). Any special products? Clothing?

Global warming. It doesn't really get cold any more. If it does, I'd say simply Grow a pair and deal w it!

I have started moisturizing right after each shower, and that seems to work for me. Sounds like you need more than me though. Maybe spread on some moisturizer on exposed skin before you go out to exercise? That might create a barrier to trap some moisture in your body. But I could imagine that also feeling gross while you exercise. I'd also guess that the less skin you expose, the less the cold air can dry you out, so get some sleeves and leg protection.

Fish oil in your diet.
Use a heavier lotion and exfoliate in the shower.

Moisturizer after showers. I put coconut oil on my face when it's really cold.

Coconut oil. You need less than you think you do.

I got the same thing. I take fish oil almost daily, doesn't seem help at all. All you got to do is lotion it up and I got emu oil to apply on my head cuz of the itchness.

- drink more water, less caffeine and alcohol
- make sure you have enough healthy fats in your diet
- make sure your soap isn't drying (Dove is great)
- consider a different moisturizer and apply while skin is still slightly damp (some lotions just trap moisture in, some actually attract moisture to your skin; you want the latter)
- exfoliate! My skin went from reptilian to smooth when I started shaving my legs daily.
- consider whether you might be sensitive to your detergent or fabric softener.
- cover up from the wind and cold, either with clothing or lotions.

I've got a DD with eczema so I've been all around the block regarding skin care. I hope this helps.

The dermatologist told me never to buy a lotion. The stuff (emollients?) that make it a "lotion" consistency will actually dry out your skin. Go with a cream!

CeraVe cream, btw is great…
