What are the best school choices for my DD? We saved enough for her to attend any school.
FCPS, GPA 3.5ish, senior, AP scholar and have more AP courses this year. SAT >2000, ACT=31, SAT subjects tests >720 (math2 and chemistry). Right now we are considering GWU, W&M, VaTech, Boston University, and maybe Carnegie? After reading here, she is considering PSU too. Will she have a chance for these schools? Thanks |
shoo in for VaTech. Probaly PSU also. So what's her passion? |
| Passion not identified yet. She is still swing between pre-med and engineering and a little bit leaning toward meds or PT... |
| For computer or electrical engineering, between GWU and VaTech, which one is better (not considering the cost)? |
| A "3.5ish" does not make her a "shoo in" for any of these colleges. Her other credentials make her competitive, but none of these schools are safeties for a kid from most Fairfax County Public High Schools. |
| Of all the schools listed, I'd say her most likely get is Penn State. They love kids from this area and high test scores definitely off set weaker grades. |
C'mon. 2012 acceptance rate 70%. |
Virginia Tech hands down - very strong engineering school. If your daughter has any interest in engineering, I'd recommend it over any of the other schools you mentioned. |
| Look at the website college confidential as well. |
You wouldn't believe the Naviance data. Kids from McLean high schools anyway average a 4.0 to get into Va Tech. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't lived through it twice in recent years. |
Well, let's give a shout out to CMU for engineering. |
|
What about:
Case Western Emory Lehigh Wash U Does W&M have engineering? |
|
Clemson
Pitt |
| If she's interested in looking at smaller schools, Bucknell and Lafayette both have good engineering and premed programs. |

Here are some interesting posts about engineering programs from the blog of a college admissions consultant. Don't miss the comments--lots of food for thought there as well:
