FCPS released the fall enrollment statistics today for county schools. One frequent topics on this forum is the concentration of center/Level IV students at certain schools relative to the Gen Ed population. Just for the heck of it, I looked at the county elementary schools with at least 200 Level IV or Center students, to see how large a percentage of the total enrollment they comprised. Here's the result:
Greenbriar West 50.8% Louise Archer 49.7% Springfield Estates 47.9% Hunters Woods 41.9% Stratford Landing 40.8% Willow Springs 40.3% Keene Mill 40.2% Haycock 39.1% Churchill Road 38.6% White Oaks 38.5% Oak Hill 35.9% Colvin Run 35.2% Canterbury Woods 34.8% Mosby Woods 33.0% Sangster 29.4% Floris 28.6% Bull Run 26.9% Forest Edge 26.4% Mantua 26.3% Lorton Station 24.6% Spring Hill 22.7% |
| It's a bit misleading since AAP is only for 4 out of the typical 7 years an elementary school holds. A better percentage would be the percentage from 3rd-6th grade. |
|
no lemon rd?
|
Lemon Road has fewer than 200 AAP students. |
| Interesting as spring hill isn't a center. |
| Still too many AAP kids in relation to the Gen Ed population. |
| These are mostly centers. Using Louise Archer as an example, in sixth grade, there are 6 classes: 4 AAP & 2 Gened. But those 4 AAP classes come from all over Vienna. If it was not a center, there would be 1 small class (20 kids) with AAP. |
That doesn't even make sense. Surely you don't think there's some optimal ratio? Presumably if the kids are smart enough to handle it, it could be 100%. Or does that not make the program elite enough for you? |
| So then Louise Archer should read as being 67% AAP for 3rd-6th grade. |
I see your point. I don't think that information would be generally available, absent a special study, although it could probably be FOIA'd. |
Yes, it makes sense. The optimal ratio would be equal or lower numbers of AAP to GE. It's not about the program being elite enough, it is about balance in the school. The GE kids are made to feel like they are weird and dumb since so many of the students in their school are AAP. |
Agree... Wonder what the stats are for Chesterbrook, Timberlane, and Shrevewood. |
About 17% and 2.5% of the total enrollments (not 3-6) at Chesterbrook and Timber Lane are in school-based Local Level IV. If Shrevewood has any Local Level IV, it's not reported separately by FCPS. |
|
Shrevewood's LLIV just started this year. It's
one third grade class in the teens (15 or so) and then there are 3 other third grade classes of about 25. So I guess it's about 16 percent of the third grade. |
| Keep in mind that the center schools will have a higher percentage because the kids come from several schools. That's the nature of a center. I'm not sure how the neighborhood parents can complain about that since they bought in boundary for a center. That's what a center is. I guess they probably thought their kids would qualify now they are upset that they don't. |
