seriously....pull ups must be the most effective single excersize someone can do.
does wonders for your posture. |
|
Running (real running outside, not on a treadmill).
Does wonders for your entire body (if you do it correctly using your arms, with correct posture for core strengthening). Oh and don't forget the added bonus of great heart health. |

Deadlifts.
|
i guess i should've prefaced exercises that don't require weights. |
|
Squats, dead lifts and pull ups are the three best exercises you can do.
|
| I would think push ups would be great. |
| Jumping rope is pretty amazing. |
LOL. Running on a treadmill isn't "real running"? |
| push ups |
Dead lifts can be done without weights. Try this even without the hand weight: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mG-Stc3c7N0&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DmG-Stc3c7N0 |
Not the PP, but yes, running on treadmill is not real running. You don't have the same surface variations to target different muscle groups - unless you're constantly changing the incline every few seconds. No wind resistance, making your body push harder. Treadmills are easier on your body (key word: easier) in how you land on your feet and use your joints & muscles. |
Yes, they are pretty amazing. The fact that I can do them at age 46 makes me feel pretty awesome. I've never considered myself an athlete up until a few ago. But I have to say that pull-ups are probably even better. Just wish I could do some. I'm trying.

The softer surface and the impact on joints is precisely the reason many people do some or most of their running on a treadmill. Are they not "real runners" if they train primarily on a treadmill, and run outside only for races? I completely agree that running on a treadmill is different from running outside, but it is still "real" running, and it is still excellent exercise. And I've found that, at times, running on a treadmill can be HARDER than running outside - if you set a speed with the intent to keep it up for the entirety of your run, you can't just naturally slow down a bit when you're feeling tired toward the end of your run (or often starting in the middle, in my case!). I'm typically more effective at pushing myself harder when I'm running on a treadmill than when running outside. -Runner who runs both on a treadmill and outside, depending on the time of day, temperature, weather, length of run, etc. |

I can't do a pullup, so they aren't a great exercise for me (though trying is probably good, and I do love the TRX row pull-up thing).
So if you're asking for the single best exercise, I think i have to vote for the hated burpee - one exercise move is a squat, jump, push up, jump, and then another jump. So you get arms and legs in plus aerobic. God I hate burpees. |
