Permission to work side jobs during gov't shutdown

Anonymous
I heard on news radio today that government employees need to obtain special permission to pick up temporary work while the government is shut down. So, not only can you not work to pay your bills, you need to seek permission and might be told no! No reasonable person is going to sit by and let their life go down the tubes. The non-essential government nurses I know lined up their temp work days ago in anticipation of a shutdown. Obviously, taking care of their families and meeting their financial obligations is more important than moronic rules.

Except, there's no one to ask if you want to do this. My manager and her manager were both furloughed as well. Am I supposed to go ask the agency head who is next in my supervisory chain for permission?

Yes, ask him. He's getting paid, he can take your call!!

Ask Congress. They're still getting paid, even if they're not working.

I think the issue is dont do anything that could conflict with your jobs. If you want to walk dogs or babysit, your probably fine. If you're a usaid workers and you want to dorm up a contract work while furloughed, that might be an issue

A government nurse should not have to walk dogs if comparable work s[he] is trained for is available. Same with an accountant or secretary. There is no way in the world I would not find temporary work if I had to regardless of any ridiculous rule.

There is no way I would hire you knowing you are going back to work with the furlough ends, even for temporary work. Small side jobs of babysitting and walking dogs are your best option, professional or not.

And this, my friends, is exactly why Federal employees are getting screwed.

They're all on TV, doing interviews.

Then you are not familiar how per diem nurses are used in agencies and hospital pools. This group of nurses are called when needed even for one or two shifts. With per diem/prn rates for nurses ranging from $40-$60 hour for med surg, ER, ICU, etc and the shortage so severe, it is an excellent solution for day to day work for seasoned nurses.

You needn't worry about any nurse seeking you out for work since you equate them for dogwalking. Qualifed nurses are laughing and clutching their sides at your enlightened advice.

There is more than one poster here. You seem to think you are entitled to work in your field and should have first pick of side jobs. If you need money, you work what ever job you can find to make ends meet. This goes for any field, not specific to nurses. There is nothing wrong with dog walking, babysitting and house cleaning.

I doubt picking up a nursing shift if you are a nurse would be an ethics conflict, though I can't be sure

I think it is more an issue for lawyers, policy analysts, etc

It has absolutely nothing to do with entitlement but ALL about what you are qualified to do. If you choose to walk dogs, there is nothing wrong with that. But for a poster to day she or he would not hire a nurse knowing they are going back to work and that babysitting or dog walking is their best option is high presumptuous and all around bullcrap.

An intelligent person will seek out temporary employment in their fields because that is the best place to start....where you have the experience. Unlike you, I know that dog walking takes experience with dogs. Not everyone has that just as not everyone has experience in nursing, accounting, babysitting, whatever. Not everyone is into babysitting or dogwalking.

^^^Some people don't like or can't handle dogs, don't like kids, and can't even keep their own house clean. All about what you are capable of doing whether professionally or not. No one should ever try and dictate how you should earn your money during this shutdown but preferably legal.
