FCPS Boundary Review Updates

The high schools should be capped at 2000. They are bigger than that already. They are unmanageable as it is.

My understanding is they are wasting a lot of money on expanding under enrolled schools (for example in Herndon) and even a new school that isn’t needed in Dunn Loring?!?

If they were scrutinizing these expenditures more carefully wouldn’t some of these boundary changes be unnecessary? I’m not against boundary changes if they are truly necessary but it feels like they are using our kids to cover up their mistakes.

We regret moving to Fairfax and will not be voting for any of these School Board members again.

McLean should be torn down and moved further from Langley. Tear it down!

They would have to build four more 2000-student high schools for that to happen. But of course we've seen they are incapable of building even more one more additional high school in western Fairfax.

It may fall down on its own given the neglect of FCPS, but it's in a more central location and serves more students who live close to the school than Langley, which really should be located near Great Falls Village to serve its current neighborhoods.

Certain groups have blocked the western high school construction for years because they knew it would trigger a boundary adjustment and they didn't want to change schools. Now the whole county is getting stuck with the boundary adjustment and no new school to show for it.

Smaller HS are fine in middle class and higher income areas, but in lower income areas they need to be larger to increase the class offerings. Even though ACHS is lower income, it is also huge, and can thus offer the high level math, STEM, specialty arts classes etc. because they have enough students to take them just by virtue of their size. You can get there with a smaller number of students at a wealthier school. Small school and high FARMS is not a good combination.

You can talk about how the marginal cost of additional seats goes down during a renovation, but it still costs more money that could be put to better use elsewhere and avoid unwanted boundary changes.

If they can articulate a specific long-term vision to use all these additional seats at Centreville (like maybe reassigning all of the current Fairfax island and part of Chantilly there), that might be a conversation worth having. But that conversation hasn’t taken place and instead they are developing scenarios to bridge the Fairfax island to the main Fairfax attendance area by reassigning part of Woodson to Fairfax. Also, the Centreville parents who’ve posted here in the past are generally aghast at the idea of a 3000-student school.

Meanwhile they continue to neglect Chantilly and McLean and offer those schools nothing other than boundary changes (or, in McLean’s case, boundary changes layered on top of boundary changes).

Make it make sense, because all I can see are School Board members who are cowards or asleep at the wheel.

Because the kids they are displacing from Chantilly to fit the 20171 kids who currently go to Oakton need to go somewhere.

So you’re suggesting they will move enough Oakton kids to Chantilly, and Chantilly kids to Centreville, to justify expanding Centreville to 3000?

That seems like a stretch to me, given that Oakton was also recently expanded. As were Herndon and Madison. Just not to 3000 seats.

But, Chantilly is the closest school to those kids. Lots of Chantilly kids live very close to centreville, as well as to Chantilly.

Can you just answer the question?

Do you need a hug, LOL?

Some Oakton kids live just down the street from Chantilly. But, there is a Fairfax High neighborhood that borders Centreville High school --not the Centreville High School boundary, but , literally Centreville High School property. Look at a map.
It is far more likely that they plan to send those kids to Centreville. And, yes, there are some kids assigned to Chantilly who are equidistant to Centreville.

But, most people just want to stay put where they are. I'm guessing the Oakton people want to stay put, as do the Chantilly people and the Centreville people.

Oakton Mom - if I could have sent my kids to Chantilly, I would have preferred that. Their commute at the moment is horrible and it's a pain in the ass when I have to pick them up during rush hour.

How do you propose we drop kids? Like everyone with last name P-Z doesn't get to go to high school? Fend for yourselves? Go into the trades?

There's still time to drop the Dunn Loring school and buy the Saudi school!

Which groups are you talking about? I live in the area and I've never heard anyone discourage it.

I don’t think the Western HS was blocked by advocacy groups, moreso by previous SB’s own incompetence. Selling the land to the Saudis to begin with set the project back 10-20 years.

She’s the one who spends day after day going after Langley.

Well, the area of the property sold to the Saudis should have no effect on Langley. It would pull from the Oak Hill area and not Herndon. It would pull from Westfield, Chantilly, Oakton and South Lakes. (Maybe, it was the South Lakes PTA that objected......?)

Yeah, but to the anti-Langley hammer, everything is a nail.
