help! rain for outdoor birthday party

Anonymous
Well, of course it would come to this. DS's bday party is Saturday at a park near our home and it's supposed to rain. The shelter will be covered, but what to do with a small group of kids if they can't get on the playground? I guess we could move things to our house, but what should we do? I don't have games or anything scheduled or set up because I planned for everything at the park. Easy peasy -- pizza, cake and done. This is for a 3-year-old, btw. I don't have time to run around buying a bunch of stuff now either. For those of you who have BTDT, help!

I rescheduled ours. Half the guests had other plans, but DS still had fun.

We've had this happen a few times... poured at the park and we all huddled under the shelter, poured at the house and we all crammed into our small house (that was twice)... this year in July it lightly rained and as soon as it stopped we sent all the kids into the soggy backyard. So frustrating and I feel your pain. Next weekend we're having our first party at an indoor place that does parties - I know that doesn't help you now but it is such a relief that I think we'll probably do it for one of the kids parties each year.

For my dd's 3 year bday, I just did a playdate birthday party. The kids came, played with dd's toys, we ate, and they left. I was new to her food allergies, and didn't even have a cake. Everyone might have been polite, but they said it was fun.

OP, I would not have my kid attend a party at the park if it's raining. If you keep the date, relocate to your house and quickly get a couple craft/art projects together. That plus your kids toys = plenty of entertainment for 3-year-olds. Pizza, cake, balloons = happiness. At that age you really don't need much.

Move it to your house. Get some paper plates, glue a tongue depresser or other stick to the plate, and have them bat around some blown up balloons. Pick up some stickers and visors or something they can decorate at Michael's. You can buy one of those rainbow parachutes at World Market. Play freeze dance with some fun music.

what time is the party? I thought the forecast wasn't for thunderstorms until the afternoon.

Aww. Poor kiddo. Is there are small community rec building at the park? If so, you might be able to rent it if you hustle to Parks and Rec tomorrow. If not, with such a small group of kids, I would do a party at the house with rainy day themed games.
Clear some space, have kids race to see who can put on their rain boots, rain coats the fastest.
Have kid's cut out and color or fingerpaint images of clouds and umbrellas (just print out from computer).
Play pin the raindrop on the cloud (again, print stuff out)
If the parents are cool with it, put on raincoats and boots and splash in a few puddles (as long as it's not a total downpour).
Have fun!

Only 30 percent chance of rain on Sat. Hold out hope! I have a party scheduled too with a backup date for rain.

OP here. Rookie mom mistake, but I have no PLAN B!

The forecast I have heard is for a pretty high chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. I don't have any problem with kids playing in the rain, but I don't think many folks will want to hang out during a thunderstorm.

The party is 3:30-5:30. Wasn't my first choice, but the shelter was booked until 2. Anyways, my house is literally four houses away, so it's no biggie to bring them there, but I have no activities planned because everything was gonna be at the park! Anyways, great ideas here. Keep 'em coming!

Sounds like I'll be visiting ACMoore tomorrow.

Another parent who would not attend a park party in the rain. Have the party at your house. I have a 2yo and 4yo and we love home parties. It is basically one big playdate and the kids love it.

PP with 2yo and 4yo. My kids just love plying with another kid's toys.

How many kids are you expecting?

We had our son's 3rd birthday at the house. The kids loved helium balloons. We bought a bouncy house for the occasion but I think the kids would have been fine without it.

You may want to get one of those pull piƱatas.

I would let parents know your home address ahead of time. Many families come late or may cancel due to rain. If they know you have a plan b, they will still come.
