I’m surprised to see people in this forum refer to urban campuses as “the jungle” and characterize urban areas as “bad.” I’d expect that type of comment from people in some rural white area, but DC? I assume most parents and children in this area encounter the urban areas of our metro area on a somewhat regular basis (if not, shame on you!). What is there to fear?

If you think you know which colleges are safe and which are dangerous, think again. Better yet, compile your own mental list and then look at this list:

Ugh. What is the distinction between "forcible rape" and "non-forcible rape" on that list? |
DMV. Snort. |
Who? When? I haven't noticed people throwing around terms like "the jungle" or "bad" to describe urban campuses. And FWIW, my DC just started at a university in NYC. |
Because too many people come in looking to renew their driver licenses?? |
I haven't seen much of this either. There is one poster who seems to hate USC, but otherwise people seem hugely anxious to get their kids into Ivy League schools in Boston, Providence, New York, New Haven and Philadelphia. |
I'm the "Who, when" poster but, honestly, I haven't seen all that much Ivy obsession here, either. Nothing like College Confidential, anyway. The vast majority of threads here seem to be about non-Ivies like Oberlin vs. Kenyon vs. Wesleyan, with some threads about Davidson and Wake Forest and Colgate and SMU and UVA thrown in. And the occasional random thread about sleeping with your professor or working while going to college. The only Ivy threads are about frats at Dartmouth, and you could hardly say those threads are filled with moms clamoring to send their kids to Dartmouth. |
WTF? The best schools in the country are almost all in urban (not particularly safe) areas: Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Chicago, MIT, to name a few. I'd happily send my kids to any of these schools. |
My DD is completely determined to go to college in NYC which freaks me out a little. We are also trying to encourage her to look at schools in smaller cities but she will be majoring in some sort of creative art and thinks the city is the best for her. Maybe she's right. She has no desire for the close campus, Greek life college experience. She has another yr to figure it out. I would be interested to hear from other parents with kids in college in NYC area |
The section with parents panting over Ivies is the private school forum. By the time kids get to the point of applying, parents are more likely to understand there are many great colleges out there. |
Who, when poster here. Yes, you're right, when people on the private school forum start talking about Ivies, I practically have to wipe the saliva off my screen. |
