I’m surprised to see people in this forum refer to urban campuses as “the jungle” and characterize urban areas as “bad.” I’d expect that type of comment from people in some rural white area, but DC? I assume most parents and children in this area encounter the urban areas of our metro area on a somewhat regular basis (if not, shame on you!). What is there to fear?
I haven't seen much of this either. There is one poster who seems to hate USC, but otherwise people seem hugely anxious to get their kids into Ivy League schools in Boston, Providence, New York, New Haven and Philadelphia.
I'm the "Who, when" poster but, honestly, I haven't seen all that much Ivy obsession here, either. Nothing like College Confidential, anyway. The vast majority of threads here seem to be about non-Ivies like Oberlin vs. Kenyon vs. Wesleyan, with some threads about Davidson and Wake Forest and Colgate and SMU and UVA thrown in. And the occasional random thread about sleeping with your professor or working while going to college. The only Ivy threads are about frats at Dartmouth, and you could hardly say those threads are filled with moms clamoring to send their kids to Dartmouth.
The section with parents panting over Ivies is the private school forum. By the time kids get to the point of applying, parents are more likely to understand there are many great colleges out there.
