Thoughts on William and Mary?

Anonymous
It's my DD's top choice. But I fear that has more to do with the fact that several of her closest friends have made it their top choice. Would you choose William and Mary over U. VA? What is life like on campus? DD wants to work in California one day (where her father is). Does William and Mary have enough name recognition outside of the region?

Is this a joke?

Oh no! William and Mary won't do! And I'm never goin back to my old school!

If Steely Dan could include WM in a song, I'd say it has recognition.

What's so funny? That someone would choose W and M over UVA?

It doesn't seem like a joke question to me...?

OP - William & Mary and UVA are both great schools. It depends on what your DD wants to study and what kind of environment she wants in a school. W&M is much smaller and tends to attract a lot of creative types - artists, aspiring performers. It's definitely a much quieter and, from my impression, more studious school in general. UVA is larger, with a much more prominent fraternity/sorority scene, and feels more "southern." Life on campus at UVA involves a lot more drinking and bars - the typical party and sports scenes.

Have your DD both campuses - they're both strong choices!

That a parent of a high school kid, presumably in Virginia, would honestly NOT KNOW anything about William and Mary.

I call bullshit.

OP is not saying she doesn't know anything about the schools. She is asking for opinions on one over the other and the name recognition from those who have experience. We need much more information to properly weigh in, though.

I hope she is also applying to CA schools. She should be in state since her dads there

PP, this post seems to have touched a raw nerve. Are you one of those posters on the other thread seemingly exasperated by the fact that many outside of the region have either not heard of UVA, or doesn't view it much different than State U?

My guess is that for your average employer on the west coast, a William and Mary grad may have more cachet than one from UVA. But that's just my guess. OP seems to want to hear from someone with more insight into that issue. I don't think that's a laughing matter.

In state for admission's purposes? I understand she might get in-state tuition. But with a DMV zip, how can she possibly be considered in-state for application purposes?

no, just lazy is my guess. Already a thread on this, plus a thing called Google. Then there's College confidential, US news rankings, another site called Students reviews...

NP. Yes, all true, save for perhaps the lazy part. I've always found that the moms (and dads?) on this forum often add a different insight or two to such things as colleges. Otherwise, why even have this forum. Same for food, and travel, and even parenting. All can be researched and discussed elswhere. Come to think of it, the only thing a google search would not yield much on is independent schools. Can you imagine having DCUM consisting of solely that madness?

Calm down, you are over reacting like nobody's business. OP did not indicate that she doesn't know anything about William and Mary, she's asking for opinions about subjective matters which is what every does in most posts on these forums. All her questions are perfectly legitimate. I hope you're just having a bad day and aren't this hostile all the time.

How would folks who have no contacts/ neighbors, etc. at William and Mary have a feel for what student life there is like? I'm putting it on the list for my kid bc it's a "good" school and has in-state tuition. At this point, I have no idea if it would be a good match for my child.

I am eager for first-hand information from others. Thanks, OP.
