Thoughts on NYU?

Can one have a true college experience there? What did you like/dislike? Does it have a good reputation?

I think there was a pretty good thread on this a year or so ago. Several NYU alumns responded. I think the general consensus was that it was pricey and living off-campus was a different sort of college experience. But do a search of the archives for their own words on the subject.

People complain about it being expensive. But other than that, I know several people who felt it was the right fit for them and who liked the opportunities it afforded by being in New York. I think it has a good academic reputation, although there will always be a contingent of people who go "NYU, that's for rich kids who aren't smart enough to go to the ivies...blah blah blah."

No not really. I know two kids who went, one was gay and fit in perfectly (theater major) and did beautifully, the other was a semi prep who was miserable and left after first semester. It is not for everyone.

Big city, crowded no real campus, and very urban in feel. If that is a students "thing" then it will be a great fit.

Depending on your major and school, NYU is overpriced for what you get. My SIL is a professor at NYU and would never send her kid there if she had to pay. Her DS is in high school and NYU is not on his list.

If a student is a self motivated, type-a, grade gunner who has a clear and unwavering goal of breaking into front office wall street finance after graduation, then NYU-Stern UG is a pretty good choice.

However, it is like swimming with the sharks.

Niece went there, a nice southern girl who is a little preppy and lasted until the first semester. She said most people were Jewish which she was fine with but most of the girls she became friends with weren't available on Friday nights because they went to celebrate Shabbas (sp)? and most of the guys were gay, though super nice and cool...she just never found her place. She is at Wake Forest now and super happy.

This is either hilarious or intended to provoke. Most students at NYU aren't Jewish. I'm an ex NY'er and actually worked at NYU some years ago, and I'm fairly closely in touch with the place. It's an incredibly diverse urban university where there are three jillion of everything. I think anybody who wants to can do well and function socially there. The real obstacles, in my view, are the cost (there's an argument that nothing short of an Ivy is worth anywhere near that kind of $), and housing access.

GREAT for law school. So much fun! If only I liked practicing law...

Troll. Most students aren't Jewish and most of the students who are Jewish are not observant and are perfectly available Friday nights.

I know several DC kids who attend now and all were drawn to the school because of the scene -- living the hipster life around Washington Square Park is their idea of a true college experience. Their parents complain a lot about the price tag, not just the tuition but the cost of living in NYC. The school is going through some growing pains -- check out the recent New Yorker profile of the president and his controversial development plans and global ambitions. Like a comparably sized state school, it has a better reputation in some fields than others. A college with a similar setting and vibe -- at half the cost -- is McGill in Montreal.

McGill is a fine school but it is absolutely huge and the classes are very large. It is much cheaper than an American college, even for Americans. Montreal isn't NYC, but its a lovely city.

but it is easy to get into.

I went there as a grad student and also found there was a large proportion of Jewish kids there. Just an observation, no judgement.
