Can a bilingual 5 year old Montessori child go in the lottery for LAMB?

Anonymous
I know that they don't typically take chd ten over 4 because they are not acclimated to Montessori and Spanish. What about an older child who is bilingual and coming from a Montessori background?

It's doesn't matter the child's background. You will just enter the lottery like everyone else. There is not language/test preference given to anyone.

I wanted to know if they can apply for the LOTTERY at all. Usually children can only enter at age 3 or 4. In some schools there is a lottery for open spots.

The can only enter at PreK 3 and 4

Your child's background is irrelevant. Talk to city council if you want that changed as it is law.

It's absurd that this child would not be eligible. I would call the school and call David Catania's office.

Is the law is overturned more families would make this a pathway for their child to attend LAMB.

I think that the age cutoff isn't just for the language immersion, but also for the Montessori model immersion. Regardless, it's probably best to ask the school itself if you have specific/special request admissions questions.

Don't call the school. That would just be annoying, and they can't do a thing about it. This is all on the city council and the mayor's office. It requires a change in law, one that most immersion schools would greatly appreciate.

Sure. Yu Ying would love to be able to accept Chinese-speaking students into its older grades, and has tried to lobby for a change in the law, but the Chinese-speaking population in DC is very small and without political clout. Whether or not LAMB wants to see a change (and they might not, because part of the Montessori method is starting from age 3-4 to begin with), there are other schools that would like it.

What other schools?

OP here, it is too bad that a child who is already in Montessori and has the target language can't apply for a lottery to fill any openings that occur due to attrition.

Yup, for charters all open spaces have to be available to all by lottery or not available to anyone.

Correction, the mandarin speaking population is small without clout. The Cantonese population is much larger and has lots of ties (some not so ethical) to DC politics.

Not a parent at LAMB, but it may not just be Montessori. They build a culture at their school and may not want to disrupt that with training new kids in their methods.

Has anyone confirmed that they don't lottery in after PK-4?
