Julie Chen reveals workplace racism led her to get plastic surgery for ‘Asian eyes’

Anonymous
I really don't agree that Julie Chen's suggestion of racism is valid here.

She is working in an industry where looks matter and so it is a bit of a stretch to attribute her lack of success initially as being related to racism. It had to do with her looks and based on the picture it is obvious that she had a whole lot more done to enhance her appearance than just dealing with her "Asian eyes". The work she had done changed her overall appearance from being quite plain to being fairly attractive.

She obviously had a very good plastic surgeon.

Um it looks like she also had a nose job.

Not ot mention she is hideous in the "before" pictures. I call BS...she definitely had it done to make herself look prettier and thats the truth.

Own it Julie Chen...she sucks by the way.

Her eyes don't look very different, her nose-job is what's obvious.

Agree that the nose job really makes the difference. She should give that guy credit for telling her the truth. Instead of crying 'racism'!

She's on right now and it also looks like she lost quite a bit of weight.

Seems like a way to admit to partaking in plastic surgery for vanity's sake while getting to hid behind the sympathetic cover of "victim of racism". Yes, let's talk about that nose too, shall we?

I went to college with her and she looks very different now!

I think you people are being harsh. I don't doubt that she had other things done in addition to the eye surgery, but I believe her when she talks about what her boss and the agent told her regarding heritage and eyes holding her back. I hardly think she is "crying 'racism'" as pp posted.

Seriously, TONS of women in China get surgeries like this, as well as nose jobs etc, to look more Euro. It does help them get jobs. Not racist at all.

Don't forget she married the president of CBS. She'll do what it takes to get her career rolling.

Surely you understand the correlation between altering one's features to look more Euro and get a job and the issue that looking more Euro is the desired quality that would help one net a job...
You do understand that this is a form of self hatred born of internalized racism...the idea that in order to be beautiful and acceptable a person must look European, right? And you do get that it is not okay for those in positions of power to pressure people to alter their ethnic features to fit some homogenized, Euro-centric standard of acceptable beauty?
Please, please tell me you've at least read something at some point of your on the impact of colonialism.

The point is that she got a whole lot more done than just her eyes; she went from looking below average in looks to being attractive.

It is no secret that looks matter in show business whether it is facial appearance or being slim to having a full head of hair for younger men.
