Hello everyone. Yes, I know , I was stupid enough to drive while intoxicated. Very embarrassed. So please no judging.
I am a stay at home mom right now and looking for a job. My hearing is in 2 months and the attorney is pretty sure I will get convicted. My question - have any of you gotten a job with a DUI? Thanks! |
| Well you won't get a job driving a school bus or being a cab driver. |

It is possible but challenging. how long have you been out of work for and what kind of work do you do?
If you are in a field where there is a good supply of workers, employers will always go with the better employees - i.e. one without a criminal record. If you work with vulnerable people, or with anyone who requires background checks, again, you are a higher risk employee. Are you pleading guilty? |
| My friend did, but it was 3 years after his DUI, he was convicted and had to attend AA meetings, a driving course (I forget what it was called) and had to do some community service. Although apparently he was also a bit combative towards the arresting officer. Anyways, that was 15 years ago and he's a pretty successful lawyer now. |

I know a couple of attorneys with DUIs... In the state you are in, is it possible to get a type of probation which could later be removed from your record? I practiced in Maryland about 10 years ago, and the sentence was called a probation before judgment. The judge would find you guilty, place you on probation, and if you did your probation well a conviction was never entered onto your record. Don't know if that's an available option for you.
Good Luck. |
| No big deal I know people with high clearances , just as long as everything else is clean but it may take a few years |
| I know lots of well-employed people with them. Attorneys, architects, computer engineers, state department, teachers, hairdressers... |
| Thank you all. I have been pitot work for 2 years. Have Masters's in International affairs but looking for anything right now. Very nervous. Will plead guilty. Also, it's VA. I need to ask about probation. Thanks! |
Have been out of work not "pitot" sorry
|
| slightly off topic...whats the difference between a DrivingUnderInfluence (DUI) and DrivingWhileIntoxicated (DWI) |
| It happened 2 months ago and I can't even think of alcohol since then. Seriously |
| I'm an attorney and have worked in 4 states though not VA. In the other 4, every client and friend who got a DUI and had no prior record, did not hurt anyone or have a serious accident, and blew less than a 0.13 got a deal that would be expunged from their record. Some had worse circumstances and still got "off". They all had to do an alcohol abuse evaluation and treatment if recommended, have probation, pay fines, and temporary license suspension, but it was sealed either immediately or a couple years later. Make sure your attorney knows what he/she is doing. |
| The sun will come up tomorrow and you will get a job. After five years with no other offensive most employers will not hold it against you. Unless there is a loser HR person screening resume for aol.com email accounts, you will be fine. |
| Your DUI is the least of your problems in the job search arena. You are doing it wrong. |
