Boundary Review Meetings

That’s great. Have they shared an update?

There is a neighborhood at our high school that is passionately fighting against rezoning citing "longer bus ride" as one of their reasons. The schools are about 1.5 miles apart, and to get to the new high school they would go against rush hour traffic, while the current school is with rush hour traffic, so the bus ride is really just a few minutes difference. Busses to that high school already travel through that neighborhood due to AAP and the quarter of that neighborhood that already attends the other high school.

I get putting forth your best argument, but some of the transportation arguments are very eye roll worthy and really grasping for straws, even if they are very valid in other scenarios in other parts of the county.

There were 4 main points that FCPS put out regarding how and why to change boundaries. They included proximity and transportation. Because of that, people are using bus ride arguments to make their case. If that is what FCPS claims to be focused on, it makes sense that parents will use that as their argument to stay or go. It might not be their strongest argument, but by using a FCPS priority to make their point they are hoping to garner some support.

They aren't listening to parents and communities or being consistent so lining up your reasons with their criteria is a bit pointless. For the purposes of an anonymous complaint forum, anyone can put forward the reason of "I don't want to move" and that's fine. As much as people come here for their side hobby of gatekeeping feelings and opinions, everyone is allowed to have whatever opinion they want.

My guess: They are incorporating the western boundaries into the total boundary review and no changes will be made until 27-28.

Zero chance this is right. You think the school board wants to run with this on their recent record? The whole reason they rushed selecting Thru was to cram this into fall 2026 so that we would have a year to be less angry. Changes in August 2027 are a worst case scenario for them.

I think they are going ahead with it.

Looks like they are bowing to Great Falls on Western school. Very sad.

Nothing really new in this, but I do think it's unfair to suggest the BRAC is somehow pushing for this review. I'm not on the BRAC (although I applied and didn't get in) and it sounds like those members are also deeply frustrated by this process.

With the cancellation of next week’s programming vote, you might be right

There have long been people in Great Falls who've tried to throw roadblocks in the way of a new, traditional HS in western Fairfax, but it's unlikely that has much to do with the recent delays in moving forward with a decision about the programming for the western HS or the boundaries for the new school. They've got to work through permitting and construction issues before a new public HS could open, even with only 9th and 10th graders, and the biggest complainers about the potential boundaries for the new school have been people now at Oakton, not people in GF.

They could open as is with 9 and 10. The school was built to hold that many kids and they can certainly adapt. Just look what they do at the overcrowded schools.

Great Falls thinks these kids are insurance for them. That has been clear ever since the purchase.

i think the problem with opening is they didn’t file the right permitting (2232?). besides a few vocal great falls residents on next door the rest of the town does not have an opinion either way on the western high school. it does not affect us.

+1. So sad that there is one poster here who posts negative posts about great falls at least a dozen times a day, even when it is not relevant.

I think she dated someone from Great falls and got dumped.

No other group actively organized against this school. But, you know that.

Why would permitting delay a decision on traditional vs. magnet?

You mean that non-great falls group that wanted it to be a magnet? That’s literally the only one I know that organized anything. Others just questioned the lack of plan and cost.

But you know that.

And, you know who was the base of FairFacts. They wanted to stop the school. Period. A magnet is not the same as a school with boundaries.

But, hopefully, this is not over.
