this a nation founded on racism so........ maybe opinions are rooted in something

but i wouldn't want you to reflect on your own life choices because they are your opinions.

no i won't check myself i am just doing what is right for my kids

is enrolling my kid in a failing school necessary to prove I am not racist? are Black people allowed to chose non-failing schools?

IIRC, white kids should stay in failing schools, because, thanks to their privilege, they'll be 'just fine' no matter what. However, black middle and upper middle class families are entirely justified in their efforts to skedaddle out of there, because their sons will suffer much more from having a failing peer group.[/sarcasm - because now that we're being read by a scraper machine, we can't rely on human brains to detect sarcasm]

Is your white kid off the hook behaviorally where you really care about the “discipline” of a school? Also, what have you done recently to inquire about the school’s “discipline” and intense homework? Private schools in DC and Basis has 2-3 hours of homework a day.

Next.

I don’t disagree that race is a factor, but I think a lot of DCUM parents say the same thing about discipline/workload wrt Basis. Also I don’t think the “Banneker as HBCU” is that far from the mark. Is the idea that we should all be considering Howard too? Banneker seems like a thriving Black space and I’m not sure an influx of white parents would be welcome. The most absurd & racist thing people do say about Banneker is when they pretend that it’s not an amazing school academically. Anyway, someone I really respect sends their kid there so it is absolutely on my list if I think my kid will be able to handle it (open question there.)

Banneker seems like a good school, but "amazing" is a stretch. Amazing schools send multiple kids to Harvard every single year. Thomas Jefferson is amazing. Banneker is not amazing.

Or some people are just kind of dumb? And extremely judgmental of people they've never met?

Yes. This is what you do. All of us. Do you really think these schools are staffed by nincompoops and nimrods and your fancy DCPS are full of genius teachers? Demographics are what you’re looking for and a willingness to mix is good for everyone. Look, you clearly aren’t up for it. But this is how it works. And it’s the core thing that is holding us back. Sputter and mutter “why I never” and bustle off holding your skirts but fixing this place takes guts. Or keep it up and have your grandkids disavow you. That’s my hope. Make my kids proud of us.

This isn’t just a DC thing. Head over to the MD and VA forums. There is definitely a lot of discussion on what schools to avoid, etc. Not criticizing just saying it happens.

No you were given a break for centuries.

Judging a school by the ivies they send their kids too is absurd.

My friends kid went to U of Michigan out of Banneker (the ivy of engineering if you must) and 5 years out two degrees. Another friends child at RIT w three majors.

But yeah it’s not as diverse as wilson

How many black friends does your kid have at wilson? How many black moms do you socialize w?

I too am wondering about this. DCUM of late is saying how diverse Wilson is so do people socialize with non-white families? And not at school, dinners in your home, sleepovers with other kids, etc.?

Uh I meant give me a break that numbers sent to Harvard = amazing, and only that.

I don’t know what you thought I could possibly have meant.

In our case, yes, to all of those (well, not for the last year, but prior).

They rally for X rights like their life depends on it, but when it comes down to walk the walk, they will opt for a lesser school to be around more of their own even if it’s not in the best interests of their DC. They will twist abs turn the narrative to make it appear that it’s not racially motivated. Just call a spade a space and admit you’re afraid of one of two possibilities, 1) you don’t want your kid to be around 99% black kids and/or 2) you clamor for vigorS As . They probably support Gay and Trans rights and maybe even donate to their worthy causes, but ish will hit the fan when their DC comes out of the closet.

What lesser schools do they go to? What are the examples?

Exactly. I think there’s more going on here. I don’t doubt there is a race aspect but is there more going on? What are these supposed lesser schools and how are you determining that?

Wilson is 5,000+ ranked high school in the nation. Banneker is 99. But yeah all kids at Wilson go there so they can walk to school (even the ones that live EOTP) or to play baseball. Or because they don’t want a lot of hard work. Or because they want AP (even though Banneker has 100% AP participation). Or because they don’t want a strict school. Or because they respect the sanctity of an elite black public school too much (even though they just graduated from Hardy where they did the same thing). Or because they don’t want uniforms....oh wait, that one doesn’t apply. Let me figure out another pretzel move quickly!!

This is hilarious. Are you even reading your messages before you throw them at the wall hoping they’ll stick?

Let me get this straight. Banneker is too hard of a school but they also don’t get as many kids into Ivies as Wilson? Is that the right depiction now?

The is very much a nationwide thing. But DC liberals seem to like to place their kids in a place where they feels there’s a “comfortable” amount of diversity. But the reality is that most of those served by our public schools are poor children of color. Nice white parents need to accept that this reality.
