Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
Because when they dared to use Eid this year, a day that was already designated as a makeup day in the calendar the approved, they got backlash from a small part of the community who cried equity to Council so now they’re scared to go by what they’ve already said they would do. |
They are creating the worst possible situation they can..they are disrupting the start of the school by changing it last minute and setting themselves up to also disrupt the end by having to extend the school year behind the planned last day of school. |
I think it's reflective of the changing demographics of the county. Yes, I know the state mandates the Easter Monday closure--but it doesn't seem to be that important in Montgomery County. It sounds like MC would rather give up a christian holiday to make room for a muslim holiday. If that's how the county has changed, that's okay and our government should be willing to work with it population on this. If Easter Monday was not a mandated holiday, that doesn't mean that for a school district where it is still important and the majority feel that they need the day off, they can't have it on their calendar. But for other counties, they make a decision that better suits their population. Ack....I sound like a republican. I'm sorry. |
I don't care. At a certain point, our kids need to be in school. MCPS needs to grow a pair and stand up to the county council. And if they designate all religious holidays, not just Muslim ones, as potential makeup days, Muslim residents will not feel targeted. |
"It sounds like MC would rather give up two minor christian holidays that few observe religiously or celebrate in any way to make room for the two biggest muslim holidays which tens of thousands of residents celebrate. " Fify |
Muslims are not stupid. They will notice when the county declines to actually use Passover as a makeup day and uses one or both Eids instead |
If it’s the next makeup day in the calendar, it should be the next one used. Period. If that means it’s Eid and not Passover then so be it. |
I don’t either. The sarcasm in my post I guess was not apparent… this whole thing is stupid. Kids need to be in school. We can’t cater to every individuals need to be off |
Exactly this. All religious holidays should be potential make-up days. When the last snow day is used and it snows again, the next snow make-up day should be used to make it up. The process that we will use should be communicated now and the potential dates should be listed. At that point, the days used simply depend on when it snows and how long our snow days last. This makes it less personal - this process should not be perceived as personal - it is an operational decision on the part of a very large organization. |
Lot simpler to just start school one week earlier. I understand the superintendent’s logic |
DP I do not understand the Superintendent's logic. If his goal is not to upset people, setting up the calendar in such a way that will most likely result in extending the school year beyond the original last day is going to piss a lot of people off. |
Not to mention everyone who has spent money on trips and camps and whatnot for that week in August who are going to be resentful during those mid-week days off that could have and should have been used as makeup days. |
+1. They should use them in the order they need them. |
Not for next year it's not. |
Why not? Because you would rather be on vacation? |
