BOE - who are people voting for?

Yet.

It is all a disgusting cat fight. Have you seen the nails on some of them?

https://moco360.media/2024/04/15/student-school-board-member-grills-mcps-on-slow-approach-to-school-safety/

I wish they would've asked MCPS their take on his claims, but it cements to me that I won't be voting for any incumbents.

He's not criticizing the incumbents (who agreed with him), he's criticizing central office staff.

That's fair, but it raises the question of why he's the only one doing it. It is the job of the other members of the board to be asking these questions, not just nodding along when a 17-year-old does what they should have done all along.

Because the board doesn't like to hurt MCPS staffers' feelings.

He wasn't complaining about the BOE he was complaining about central office.

Learn to read cognitively people. Jesus.

Aren't people working at central office MCPS staffers? Jesus.

BOE has plenty of trouble getting clarity from Central Office. CO are beholden to the Superintendent, not the BOE. The Superintendent is supposed to be beholden to the BOE, but look at the fix they were in with McKnight.

That said, there are BOE members who have been just fine with that, not pushing back an iota at anything questionable, and others who just have been too soft.

So BOE like getting $25k/each + benefits to do nothing? AND they hired staffers?

While in theory it may be BOE-Super-CO, it seems the reverse. McK thought this BOE would never send her packing. We still don't know exactly what happened with them and McKnight. SMH. That's our taxpayer million+ you gave out.

I think they finally hired additional staff because the recent, high-profile conundrum made it all too obvious. If they'd had a staff of any size that would allow some controls over CO before that (instead of the other way around, as you note), they'd be lambasted for a waste of taxpayer $ by the same people lambasting them for the payout.

I think that was a terrible waste, too, but that would have to have been something that the BOE addressed way back before they agreed to McKnight's ascension to the superintendency, and probably for the two or three before that. With what time and resources? Certainly not MCPS CO. No help from County Council and their bloated staff. At a level closer to minimum wage than area median given the time they spend? (Again, not so for the County Council & lead staff fat cats.)

But, hey, it's plus benefits! Surely those well-qualified for $B++ executive oversight would want to quit their jobs for that!

The BOE has failed county residents, their teachers and their students. It is time for change. Vote all of the incumbents out! They are the ones that should be blamed for the mess that MCPS is in.

And bring back BOE members from the last decade + to question them of payout of another Super a decade ago. Did McKnight and her office think they were going to get away with whatever they were/are trying to hide regarding the scandal - details, key dates, timeline, complaints from staff etc., -because current BOE is a group of women? "Women shouldn't bring other women down", that too women of color? Anyone at CO Super office or BOE want to answer this?

I realize this is your talking points and you are sticking to it, but replacing all of the board members is not one of our choices. There are 8 BoE members. Only 3 are up for re-election this cycle.

Even if every single incumbent loses, the folks we elect in 2024 are still going to need to work with the folks elected in 2022. The next two years are going to be vital for MCPS, and we don't have time to lose on culture war grandstanders, folks using BoE as a political stepping stone, or candidates who are coming in so antagonistic that they won't be able to cooperate with their colleagues to get things done.

I'm not happy with the current board, either, and am unlikely to vote for most of the incumbents. But I also very much want MCPS to succeed, for the sake of my own kids and our collective kids. This means I need to identify candidates who are solution-oriented, good team players, and actual believers in public education.

Yes indeed!!!

This is one of the most laughable things I have read on DCUM in months, and it's stiff competition, so congratulations, I guess?

I'm planning to vote for Natalie Zimmerman, Laura Stewart, and either Lynne Harris or Rita Montoya (I haven't made up my mind yet).

Why Montoya over a few others in the At-Large group? Why not Kim? Or Long? Your insights could help others if you can share. Harris, an incumbent (or is this Harris herself or her super fan that loves to write here)?

I'm the PP you're responding to, and I am not Lynne Harris. Good grief.

Kim was fired from DCPS for bullying and intimidation, which are the exact things we were outraged that Joel Beidleman got away with in our system. Why would we want more of that?

I'm not crazy about the board either, but the OIG was nonsense was just a smokescreen to appease the McKnight haters. Even the first report said this was a big nothing burger. They only later changed it to appease the crazies.

Seems exactly the type of dedicated warrior MCPS needs to improve.

He has a very minimal campaign website, has not replied to inquiries from local media, and did not show for the LWV panel. His website is literally just calls for volunteers and money, but no information about his platform or where he stands on key issues impacting our community. I don't think he actually wants the job.
