flying a state flag

Our new house came equipped with a flag pole holder. DH is excited about getting a state flag to fly out front. I think it's conspicuous and makes me cringe a little. I don't know why. Should I relax and let him have this one?

DC flag would be cool, VA not so much. We had a holder on our house, but just out the American flag up around Independence Day. I'm a little weirded out by people who hang it year round. You shouldn't love your country that much.

We mix up our flags - states we are from originally, US flag, countries we lived in and care about a lot.
