DS loves to read adventure books, fantasy, science fiction etc. He has read the usual suspects - Harry Potter, Artemis Fowl, Percy Jackson etc...I checked out the NPR reading list and frankly I do not care for him to read all the heart-breaking life-is-so-tough kind of books that get the Newberry Awards.
So - looking for some hidden gems and interesting reads that are boy-approved. |
Well, I'm looking forward to the answers. My 9yo LOVES Percy Jackson and Artemis Fowl. Let's see some reccs!

The blue sword. The hobbit. Rangers apprentice series. |
My 9-year-old son's a big reader. Here are some things he's really liked over the past year:
Peter Larengis Seven Wonders Series Wings of Fire series EVERYTHING by Brian Jacques (start with Redwall) The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings series The Warriors (It's completely patterned off of Brian Jacques and is how I got him to move over to Jacques, which is a better set of books). BTW, you may not particularly be fond of the Newberry-type book, but I'd just bring him to the library and set him free. He'll find things he likes. My 11-year-old has had tried lots of different types of books just because of Newberry/touchy-feely things he read in school. While he always picks the same types of books as your son, he's really liked Because of Winn-Dixie, Number the Stars (put him on a kick of reading lots about the Holocaust), Navigating Early, Chomp. Variation is a good thing, particularly when they decide for themselves. |
Rangers Apprentice series, the Brotherband Chronicles, 39 Clues, How to Train Your Dragon series. |
I don't know what to say, because almost all my boys' favorite books are on that list. Some of the more light-hearted or just plain cool ones:
Mr. Popper's Penguins A Long Way from Chicago The Cricket in Times Square Charlotte's Web James and the Giant Peach Danny the Champion of the World The Saturdays and the other Melendy books by Elizabeth Enright The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles the Narnia books Harriet the Spy Holes Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing Matilda From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler D'Aulaire's Greek Myths My Side of the Mountain Hatchet My boys also loved: Calvin & Hobbes collections the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series Tintin books The Great Brain series Gone-Away Lake and Return to Gone-Away anything by Roald Dahl Stuart Little The Trumpet of the Swan If he likes baseball, The Kid from Tomkinsville and sequels are very good. The also loved several of the heart-breaking books on the NPR list, but most of those I read aloud to them. I prefer(ed) that for the sadder stuff. I highly recommend Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. One of the best and most powerful books ever written, for adult or child. |
Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen and its sequels. Might be a bit old for your son but if he is reading Harry Potter etc. it is probably fine.

I couldn't put them down! http://www.amazon.com/Chains-Seeds-of-America-ebook/dp/B002WEPFES/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1378435381&sr=1-3&keywords=laurie+halse+anderson Loser, by Jerry Spinelli. My kids loved it (and his other books). http://www.amazon.com/Loser-ebook/dp/B0014H32FI/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1378435431&sr=1-1&keywords=loser |
Beyonders, fable haven by Brandon mull |
Thank you all...
He is exposed to the Newbery Awards books (school, older sister, library), but I think he should wait for the heart-breaking ones for one or two year more. Here some more suggestions I got from my friends - 1) Eye of the Crow: The Boy Sherlock Holmes, His 1st Case by Shane Peacock (the series) 2) Asterix Comic books 3) The Underland Chronicles: Books 1-5 Paperback Box Set by Suzanne Collins |
You can ask the librarian about the Black Eyed Susan award candidates for this school year. They are all highly recommended new books the kids vote on at school in Maryland. Maryland then names the winner in the spring.
Other books: The 39 Clues Series The Chronicles of Narnia (The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is the most popular book in the series) A Wrinkle in Time |
OP here, I saw this...it has many books that DS has already read and enjoyed. However - an age range of 9-15 was too broad for me. ![]() |
Great idea...They too have an age range category of 9 - 12 Last years nominees were - 9 – 12 Nominees Blake, Kendare – Anna Dressed in Blood Gagnon, Michelle – Don’t Turn Around Green, John – The Fault in Our Stars Levithan, David – Every Day McCormick, Patricia – Never Fall Down Monaghan, Annabel – A Girl Named Digit Myracle, Lauren – Shine Saenz, Benjamin Alire – Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe Van Draanen, Wendelin – The Running Dream Zarr, Sara – How to Save a Life |
My 8 year old son read "The Familiars" series this summer and enjoyed it. There are 3 books and another coming out this winter. It was recommended in the KidsPost this summer.
Last week, he started the Warriors series. |
