Having trouble understanding the WMATA website. DS goes to DC private. We live in MD. Does he qualify for WMATA student fares?

I had the same question. It seems that we cannot apply for the student fares unless you live in Silver Spring, MD.

You cannot partake of the free bus service offered to DC residents but you can get reduced fare on metro. Ask your school to apply for you.

Um, no. D.C. taxpayers are not paying to subsidize an out-of-state resident who attends a private school here. This is so off-base I can hardly restrain myself from further comment. And obviously you're also not even able to take 15 seconds to research this question, or you would have found this on the WMATA website:

Student Fares

Metro student fare products are for District students who use Metrobus, Metrorail, or the DC Circulator to travel to and from school and school sponsored educational activities. Student fares are sold at Metro sales offices and through the WMATA website. Students must obtain and register their DC One Student Card (http://dconecard.dc.gov) requested through their school or DC One Card Customer Service Center or obtain a DDOT Student Travel Card Application from their school to be certified to purchase student fares. For more information, contact the Office of Mass Transit's School Transit Subsidy Program at 202-673-1740.

And this:

http://ddot.dc.gov/DC/DDOT/Services/Transit+Subsidies/School+Transit+Subsidy+Program

In order for any District student to qualify for the School Transit Subsidy Program they must meet all four qualifications:
1.Be a resident of the District of Columbia;
2.Be less than 22 years of age (Note: Age requirement expanded for all students, except for eligible youth in the District’s Foster Care system.);
3.Be enrolled in an elementary or secondary public, private, charter or parochial school located within the District; or a “ward of DC” through the Foster Care System; and
4.Need to use Metrobus and/or Metrorail for travel to and from school and to and from related educational activities in the District.

The metro goes into MD and VA... It is not just a DC service... The md kid needs it to get to school starting in md. Don't know why this would incense you.

Lobby your senator or congressperson to pay a subsidy to Metro for this.

Dr Gridlock address this problem. MoCo subsidizes students traveling within MoCo, and DC subsidizes students traveling within DC, but neither covers students traveling across the border. It seems though like they should work out some reciprocity arrangement.

I assume the family that lived in MD that Dr. Gridlock was responding to was paying DCPS tuition - but that is a different issue.

The counties subsidize transportation for children attending school in the county in cases where school bus service is not provided. In DC, this is for almost 100% of the student population as the only school buses are for children with special needs or schools that have "failed".

Why should the county subsidize getting children to and from private school?

I believe you are mistaken. DC regularly subsidizes DC students traveling to private schools in DC. Why would students who choose to attend private schools be treated any differently? It's only an issue when there's a cross-border situation.

Why should they be treated differently? Because they don't live in DC and don't pay DC taxes dumbass.

Maryland and VA pay into Metro , too

Really it's the fed that subsidizes most of it

This question is ridiculous. Can you explain why you think DC should subsidize your transportation to private school when there is likely a public school within walking distance of your house?
