Vacation budget for families w/HHI of 400+K

Anonymous
If you have a HHI of 400+k and are doing a good job of saving, emergency fund, retirement, college, etc., do you have a set family vacation budget and what is it per year? Totally aware this is a matter of priorities, etc. but trying to do some anecdotal "research."

We have always done 4% of our income. When we were making 45k that amounted to about 1800 bucks which equated to driving to a beach town, staying in a mediocre condo and packing our coolers daily (aka no eating out). Now that we have a HHI of about 500k that 20k is either for 1 european trip and a beach like trip or 2 or 3 decent (but usually domestic) trips. We still always stay middle of the road on accommodations but eat way better now.

2,500 per year. That is not a typo.

When our HHI hit that level we bought a house at the beach.

I don't really set a specific budget for vacations. We have a beach house so that would blow any budget anyway. While we take several ski trips a year, which are expensive, we are not deluxe travelers by any stretch. We usually do a big trip every other year or so - maybe spend $10-12k, a good chunk of which is probably airfare.

So, is that the only place you travel? Do you travel at Christmas?

Is this the "I want to spend $40K on a lavish Caribbean vacation" OP?

That was a HILARIOUS thread.

$15-$20k for all travel a year.

why so little?

$10,000-$15,000, which includes at least one caribbean vacation at a nice resort (we usually use miles for the flights) plus 2 weekend trips somewhere. My parents have a place at the beach, so we use that for a week or two in the summer.

Yeah, why? I'm curious too....have you never been to Europe? Do you have a ton of other expenses? Do you hate vacations?!?

We drive boring cars, and don't shop lavishly. Travel is usually our biggest expense of the year. In the last twelve months, we've been to South Africa and Namibia, Vegas, Cape Cod, NYC, Vail, Vienna (not the one in VA) and a couple of family visits to CA/CO. That's a bit more than usual, but we're probably looking at $80K over the last year. HHI is around $500K. Three kids along on most but not all trips. I rationalize that we value experience more than stuff, but I do realize it sounds a bit excessive compared to the others who have posted.

It depends on your budget is, how many people in your family, and what you like to do. We do a lot of tagging on business trip and using miles. So a lot of trips don't cost as much as if they were stand a lone trips. We don't like big hotels(they tend to all look a like, we do not spend much time in the hotel, and we see a lot of them on business trips). One or two trips a year to a small out of the way places, never a package tour unless its for an active(like flyfishing, diving) About 5-6k, maybe 10k in a big year.

Usually about $8000. Although we are barely at $400,000 and do private school. Both parents work and neither gets that much vacation time or we would probably have bought a place at the beach by now.
