| Mine is 28-32 is that normal ? we just switched exclusively to formula |
| On any given day it can range from 28 to 36. According to the equation weight x 2.5 it is not enough but you can't shove the food down their throat. Also, many exclusively breastfed mothers don't ever really know what the baby is getting. |

My 5 mo. old had 30-36 ounces a day when not consuming solids. (5-6, 6 oz bottles)
When we factored in 2-4 tablespoons of cereal (which I mixed with water) it was closer to 27-33 ounces per day. |
| Wow! My 8 month old DD gets 4 6-7oz bottles a day averaging around 26 oz/day. Reading your posts makes me think she's not getting enough. My ped said it was the right amount but my older DD definitely took more. I can't get my baby to take more than that plus she's eating some solids and she's in the 50th % for weight. I hope I'm doing the right thing. |
| We're exclusively formula too and DS is 4.5 months. He is offered four 8 ounce bottles a day - he sometimes drinks all (32 ounces) but more often a few ounces less. He also has reflux so I would estimate that he spits up 3-4 ounces too. Despite this he is gaining pretty well and is in the 50% percentile (which is where his brother - who was EBF -was at the same age). So, I think your DC sonds quite typical. |
According to my Ped at my son's 9-month appt, as long as baby is getting 24-ounces he/she is good. The rest can be solids. |
| My baby is 3 months old and is taking 5-6 ounces 5 times a day, he has been doing this since he was a month old. He is in the 95% for his height and weight. Also he eats every four hours. |
Hi! I'm a new mom and I just wanted to share. My baby is 5 months old and he takes in about 28-30 ounces a day. He is growing so well! I give him about 4-5 bottles throughout the day. In the morning or in the evening - I just started to feed him once a day 1-2tbsp of rice cereal mixed in with about an 1 oz of formula. I've done this for a few days now and he is starting to get used to it. I've decided to start slowly with solids and then at 6 months, (which will be in a few weeks), I'll give him more. He always tells me how much or how little he wants. He is a wonderful baby. I've learned to listen to my baby's cues as to how he wants to eat. I've learned so much in half a year and I continue to learn more each day. Just wanted to add my 2 cents and that I love being a mom!

| OP, sounds perfectly normal. DS drank 32 at 5 months. My ped explained that the 2.5xweight rule should pretty much be discarded after a few months and that you don't want to get above an average of 32oz/day if possible because formula is fortified with iron and vit d assuming a 32 max. More iron or vit d than that isn't healthy. If at 5 months a baby took much more than 32, I think that's an indication that the little guy is ready for solids. |

My DS is 5.5 mos and would easily drink 40+ ounces a day if we let him. He's 21 pounds already and 28 inches long (9lbs, 21.5 at birth).
I try to give him 30oz max a day. My pedi said she'd like me to stay around that number so he doesn't get unnecessarily big. |
|
PP here. We also feed DS solids 2x a day. He's just a voracious eater.
DH is hoping he'll be a voracious football player and get a Div I scholarship
|
| DS is only 4 mos but he takes 35-36 ounces a day. Ped told me I was overfeeding but he is hungry...not sure what else to do. Have started solids just yet. |
|
Everything I have read says that the average is about 30 oz a day until 6 months when more solids are introduced. DD will be 5 months on Saturday. She receives breastmilk only (25oz a day plus one nursing session) and rice cereal and a fruit and veggie at night.
I am sure what you are doing is perfect for your baby. |
| I think as long as your baby is thriving then you're doing fine. My dd is almost six months and usually takes 4 oz bottles with a 6 oz bottle before bed. I always make a 5oz bottle but she doesn't always finish it. She's growing great so I don't have any concerns. This is different though because with dd#1 she was drinking 6-8oz regularly by now but...each baby is different. I am also giving her solids twice a day but as long as she's getting 20-26oz of formula a day I'm ok with it. |
| DS is barely 4 months and generally takes 42 oz per day (6 bottles of 7 oz each). Sometimes we are able to spread out the feedings so that he gets only 5 bottles, but usually it's 6. He always finishes every bottle to the dregs and would take more if I offered it. If I offer less than 7 he cries for more. Are we overfeeding??? Is it time to think about solids? It seems early. He was less than 6 lbs at birth and is well over 15 lbs now, and chunky! He does sleep through the night most nights, so I'm not worried about that--is there any other reason to start solids this early? (Sorry to hijack the thread....but if anyone has any input I'd appreciate it.) |
