DH was at home w kids for several years. For the last 3 or so, he's been working pt, now about 25 or so hours per week in a family member's small business doing office work and light bookkeeping. He needs to get back to work and office work is not his forte, for many reasons.
Is there hope for him to get a fed or state govt job w no college and limited office skills? He's much better in something that he wouldn't be tied to a desk, but not too physically taxing either due to some back problems and his age (48). He wants a mon to fri job and could probably do an easy office job, but he's not a natural. He doesn't need a lot if $$, bur benefits and ft work would be best. I'd this even possible? Thx, |
| OP here, to clarify, he needs to get back to work FT, and this family business gig is also drying up so more work there is not an option. |
| Bank teller. |
| How old are the children now? |
| I am sorry...what did you say your husband was offering besides a list of requests...? |
I'm not sure what kind of job would be not too physically taxing but also not an office job - what are you picturing, OP? I used to be a state employee and my husband is a fed, and I can't think of any jobs that fit that description. Jobs at the University of Maryland are state jobs...but again, the only non-office jobs I can think of would be more physical (grounds, food service, maintenance, etc). |
| Target? |
| Reservation clerk in hotel. A relative, who is younger than your DH, with one year of college was hired right away. Job pays health benefits. She is thrilled. Good luck OP. it's tough out there for job seekers with college and post graduate degrees. I was shocked at how quickly my relative was hired. |

Costco cashier.
Bank teller. Hotel Clerk. All good options if he is good with people. |

Is there an Ikea nearby? Can he do retail? A lot of standing and running around, but no heavy lifting if he's a salesclerk. If he's in the warehouse, though, that's a different story.
Cashiers are on their feet all day, but there seems to be a lot of turnover. Does he have any management experience? Can he be an assistant manager in a store? |
| Friend of mine got a job driving a school bus. Great hours and all you need is a clean driving record. |
Does he have any specialized experience in construction, building management, police work, tech support, teaching or counseling? Local governments have decent jobs in those areas, and in the latter two, men can be scarce so being a man could be an advantage. If he doesn't have any sort of specialized experience, it could be tough, because generally government compensation in low-paying fields tends to be higher than in the private sector (whereas government pay for, say, attorneys and other high-income fields tends to be lower than in the private sector). That's why there is a lot of competition for jobs in, say, federal mailrooms, etc. If he is a veteran, though, he might have a chance with the feds. GL! |
| Maybe sales of some sort OP? Is he good with details, people, and reaching deadline? |
| what about something in distribution or mass production, like a print shop? I know some people without college degrees that work there and really like it |
| UPS, many people love it. |
