How to amp up calories in a no-dairy diet?

Anonymous
I'm bf-ing and it's clear that my daughter has a pretty severe response when I have dairy, so I'm switching to a dairy free diet for the duration of bf-ing. The issue I'm having is finding ways to seriously increase the fat and calories I get in that diet. With my son, if I didn't get 800+ extra calories a day my supply dropped 19and I didn't gain weight, so my body was really using those calories. not just my imagination). All the recipes I've found are really healthy (which is good), but I'm starting to see the same pattern for my supply dropping because I'm not getting enough calories.

Last time I would do things like add extra cheese, switched to whole milk, add an extra snack, etc, but those aren't options this time, sooo...

Any good dairy free recipes that don't skimp on the calories? Any recommendations for non-dairy pre-made snacks I can stock the pantry with (e.g., Triscuits)?

TIA!

Peanut butter. On white bread, on Ritz crackers. Guys I was friends with in high school would eat whole boxes of Ritz crackers smothered in peanut butter if they were trying to gain or maintain weight.

Coconut and olive oil have helped me not feel deprived, along with nuts and almond butter. chia too. My DD is MSPI and likely egg and peanut intolerant too, so my options are quite limited. The coconut ice cream products are good- try So Delicious brand plus Trader Joe's. Check MSPI Mama blog/ website for nondairy recipes. Good luck!

And avocado! I've started mashing it and using on sandwiches as a condiment. Yum.

Google recipes using coconut milk and coconut cream. There are smoothies, baked goods, etc.

When I lived in Spain I ate toast with olive oil every morning. Dump a little good quality olive oil (Goya extra virgin is good for a cheap option) in a saucer with a little salt. Toast bread (leftover baguette is great) break off pieces and dip into the oil. Delicious. Good with strong coffee and an orange.

I just went through the same thing for the past year while nursing my dairy and soy sensitive baby. I had to be really careful not to have a calorie deficit so I didn't affect my supply.

Agree with the advice to use coconut oil/milk, avocados(!!!). Also consider almonds. They help your supply as an added bonus. Hummus is another good snack.

Breakfast was usually steel cut oatmeal (made a big batch to eat throughout the week) mixed with almond milk, brown sugar, dried fruit and sometimes peanut butter. Then oon the way to work I would have a big fruit/spinach smoothie with protein powder (Amazing Meal brand, cheapest on Amazon).

Mid-morning snack was usually a PB&J or some variation on whole wheat bread.

Lunches were usually dinner leftovers. I used to eat salad for lunch but I learned that wasn't enough calories.

Afternoon snack was usually almond milk with granola.

Dinners ideas:

•Salads – I make a big salad on Sundays (dry the greens really well in a spinner) and take it for lunch every day
•Burritos/Fajitas (I make a big batch of Mexican Black Beans; freeze in small portions, add rice and avocado; salsa optional)
•Stir Fry (use coconut aminos for soy sauce) (Trader Joe’s has a good and nutritious Shrimp and Vegetable Stir Fry that I love)
•Pasta with homemade Bolognese (sub olive oil for butter and almond milk for milk)
•Fried Rice – (use coconut aminos for soy sauce)
•Paella (recipe from MSPI Mama, I used boneless, skinless chicken pieces)
•Salmon/Fish/Seafood dishes
•Chili
•Frittatas – not bad when made with Daiya dairy and soy free cheese
•Vegan Cream Sauce – my sister made me a delicious cream sauce made from boiling and blending raw cashews. Delicious.
•Vegan Mushroom Ravioli – my indulgent meal; found in the refrigerated section above the cheese (irony!) at MOMs.
•Crab Cakes
•Peanut Noodles – I make this recipe using coconut aminos and shrimp or chicken
•Pad Thai - I like this recipe
•Grilled Chicken Thighs with quinoa and veggies

I have a ton more ideas for surviving if you need them. Good luck and hang in there!

Thanks for the replies - I really appreciate it! (OP again)

9:10...do you have the recipe for the vegan cream sauce? Sounds tasty (as do your other ideas!)
